Birth year Rolex

Only recently I have been coming out of modern pieces and into vintage, probably because I feel that I am not really collecting watches, more just purchasing off the shelf and they losing small fortunes when I flip. So the thought with vintage is that they are more unique and the hunt is more interesting with the research and finding the right one. Difficulty in living in an Island is that there aren't any for sale here, thankfully I have a few good contacts now.

Finally took the plunge on a birth year 1983 Rolex Sea-Dweller reference 16660 aka 'triple 6'. A transitional model as it still had the matte dial, no WG surrounds but has the sapphire crystal. So you get the best of both vintage and some modern. Dial and hands are original and match perfectly with a nice patina.

I went for the SD as I've loads of Submariners before and earlier this year had an SD 4000 and find the SD more versatile.

A few quick photos on my ageing Blackberry, excuses...

Cheers

James

That's stunning? Did you buy it from MJ in London? In that case, you were lucky - my good friend was next in line.

I dig the transitional models as well. I've got the little brother; a 16800 also from 1983 - also my birthyear.

Love it. I myself would have to get a 1985.... seems like that is a "harder year" to come by in my searches.

It was indeed, technically I was 2nd but thankfully the first guy in line bought his AP instead. I am really happy with it.

That is a beautiful watch but I am more intrigued by where you live. Were you born in Guernsey?

Congratulations.

Going vintage sits well with still using a blackberry!

Yes born in Guernsey. Lived in England for about 6 years but got fed up and left and moved back out here :) Not many people know about here as its so small.

Very nice Sea Dweller! These triple sixes with matte dials are becoming next to impossible to find in excellent condition.

Great patina, enhanced by the absence of the white gold surround. Excellent taste for a Guernseyman.

Loads of options, Chrono24, eBay etc. There is a thread here in the vintage forum of trusted vintage sellers like 10 past ten or Bobs watches etc
