47mm???

After selling my 510 a few years ago, the Panerai bug has bit me again as my small collection is begging for one. In all seriousness, I am missing the versatility that a Panerai brings (with its strap changes) and generally just the clean and unmistakable look of Panerai. I always thought a 44 was too big but realized that after owning a 510, you either go big or go home with a Panerai...within reason of course.
I was (and still am) pretty close to pulling the trigger on the 533 - love the look of the ecru dial, appreciate the technical complications, etc. A lot of love for the 233 on the forum and don't get me wrong, love it too...but just felt a little 'cold' and more tool watch oriented after trying it on a few times. And I think I like having that extra 3 or 9 on the dial.
That said, I recently tried on the 422. Never really considered it due to the size. And wow...blown away at how much I loved it on the wrist. The hands, the dial, the manual movement, the PR on the back...just ticking every box for me. Not to mention the huge delta in price (in retail anyway)! It sat flatter than the 233 and the 335, both of which I did get to try on and I'm assuming the 533 will feel the same. Felt like it spread the size better. And after spending a few mins with the 422, honestly didn't even feel that large. Taking a step back from the mirror, didn't look that much larger than a 44 other than on paper.
Won't go into wrist size and all that stuff but here are some old pics of the 510 on my wrist and some shot of the 422. Seeking honest opinions...is the 422 too big on my wrist? Will I get tired of the 422 due to it being 'large'? Will not be as wearable as a daily due to the size? While I think it's at home on leather, is it as wearable on rubber?

Wear what you're comfortable with, but IMHO it looks best if the lugs don't go outside your wrist...

I absolutely adore the 422 and its next on my list with the hope of getting it sometime this year. With that said it causes me much sadness to say this, but my honest opinion is that I think it looks a bit too big for your wrist. The 44mm you can get away with, but the 47mm just seems a little too big.

I'm a big guy (6'6" ish), and my 47mm Breitling feels huge. I couldn't imagine wearing one of i was under 6'2".

In these close-up, blown up shots, it looks a little big, but not insane. With thin straps and not much tail, I think you could be fine. And if it's a weekend/casual watch, even better.

But, most important is what you think.

Thanks for the early repossess...yeah I'm on the second to the last hole on a standard strap. Even with the 44 there is minimal overhang of the lugs and I was wearing it pretty low on the wrist when trying on the 422. Will spend some more quality time with it this afternoon...get to wear it a little further up the wrist as I typically do.

As much as I love the look of the 422, I think the lug overhang would stop it for me, but just my humble opinion

I was in exactly the same situation as you. Had my eye on the 533 but then saw the 422 and was hooked on it. I was also unsure about size and asked opinions on it however I have slightly bigger wrists than you. Just slightly and was given the all clear. It's a bit big on you but I say if you personally love it and won't have regrets. Then go for it!

AD!!!! After comparing several models, the 422 was just amazing on the wrist...everything about it from the manual wind, PR indicator, and those gold hands...just amazing.
Yes, largest watch I own but honestly did not seem bigger than the 44 on the wrist. And actually I think I was more concerned that the 533 sat higher and the total watch just felt bigger. Love everything about my 422 and excited to be back in the club. Looking forward to adding to the "which Pam are you wearing today" thread :)

To answer the original question - yes it looks big. It's designed to be a big, sporty watch, so it looks just as it's supposed to on you. Panerai doesn't make 47mm watches for people with 10" wrists, they make them for regular people like us who want cool big watches.

Do not judge Panerai on size alone. Granted, if you're a skinny dude who prefers to wear tank tops or very slim fitting clothing, a big watch may seem out of place on your wrist. However, if you pair a watch with a chunkier clothing (e.g., a winter sweater) you should be fine. Your outfit and the way you wear the watch counts matters as much as the size.

Thanks for all the positive comments. And naturally, watches always look bigger on these blown up pics. But as with all watches, really need to try them on to see how they wear on the wrist. Tried to a DSSD and a Big Pilot just to compare and those watches felt and looked way too big on my wrist.

Well said. I dare say Panerai is an exception where if the lug doesnt reach the end of your wrists it looks weird. Which I think is why 40-42mm is not that popular.
