...any forum members with safe queens?
what watches have you got hidden away? your reasons?
on a side note, why is it frowned upon to have safe queens? |

Myself buy Rolex watches to wear only, have done the same over the past 40 years, but to many today Rolex are no longer watches to be worn and enjoyed, they are now nothing more than $$$$$$£££££££££.

In general I don't like the idea of Safe Queens as I feel watches were made to be worn and shouldn't be seen as investment opportunities.
However, I do understand that if someone has a particularly nice example of any given watch whether it be modern or vintage then they may only wear it occasionally to protect it from every day knocks and scuffs that's fine. But to buy a watch in mint condition, again whether modern or vintage and then just lock it away for 20 years in the hope it increases in value one day is a shame I think. I do actually get the idea of having a safe queen.
If you don't need the money and it's crap interest rate. Why not have one and take a punt on it increasing in value. Thing is would you ever wear it ?? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

If someone wants to spend their money on a Rolex and then stash it away in a safe, then fine, it is their right and their choice. However they would almost certainly be better off, in the longer term, buying stocks and shares. Basically I would suggest they are financially naïve and in one respect are allowing their interest in Rolex to over rule their head. Also tactically it is a mistake because it is a two way loss situation, they become unpopular with watch enthusiasts and the financial people think they are a little bit gullible. Regards Mick |

I wear my watches and don't have a safe queen.
But "each his own" when it comes about money or investments.

I have a Patek that I might wear a couple of times a year. It's totally as new and somewhat rare. I lead a very active lifestyle and prefer Rolex due to their ruggedness. I'd sell the Patek except it has great sentimental value. My wife surprised me with it in London for my birthday. Research shows it is worth many time what she paid. My Rolex get worn daily.

I like to wear watches first and foremost but have enough of them that I can stash a few away for fun. I put away a NOS no date sub for my son who is now 3 years old. Also stashed a NOS 116600. Have 3 other sea dwellers that I wear so I don't feel like I'm missing out that much.
I don't get why people always say you can make more in stocks. No duh. But stocks and bonds are boring. Watches are fun. Also diversification is important. It's nice to put a few percent of net worth in things like gold and watches and jewelry, which are less linked to the broader financial system. It's like saying why buy art? You can make more in stocks. |

It seems like a real long shot that you will be able to overcome the following to make it a worthwhile investment:
0 Opportunity cost of money tied up in watch 0 Insurance if not kept in bank vault 0 5 - 10 year servicing cost I imagine many watch lovers look at safe queens like car lovers look at garage queens: It is too bad the watch/car is not being enjoyed for its intended purpose. Although there are clearly *some* watches that have proven to be great investments, I tend to think of those buying stuff they like as investments (watches, Ferraris, etc.) are really just trying to justify their hobby/passion spending. Me? I don't care. Your money, your choice. It's not like you're going to absorb the available supply by tossing a Sub or Daytona or whatever into a safe for 10 or 40 years.

There is no guarantee that the Rolex market with maintain its current values. All this is the reason why I have a difficult time owning more than one watch- it bothers me to no end to have a several thousand dollar watch just sitting in a safe or drawer. If I want my money to sit in a safe, I'd rather invest it and it make money. That and I'm no Rolex expert, so anything I pick out will likely drop in value versus being on the front page of Hodinkee in 10yrs. |

I guess, though not voluntarily - every time I take my Navitimer out of the safe it has to go back to Breitling for some defect, so now I'm just leaving it in there.
Still love it, but when I wanted to wind it up the other day, there was so much resistance on the crown that I suspect a third trip back to the factory is in its future...

I think it's just that some folks feel leaving a watch in a safe - when one could be enjoying it on the wrist - is a shame. We have a limited time on this earth before we're food for worms...so why not wear the heck out of our watches? That said, if one has unlimited funds and enjoys trotting out NOS watches from time to time to fondle them...I don't know. I'd still want to wear them! |

I don't see a problem with safe queens, however I don't have any. Some people really enjoy collecting things, watches, dolls, guns, etc. and that's great if you are so inclined.

My omega is a "safe queen" more like a watch box queen since I don't own a safe. The watch was gifted to me by my father who bought it new before I was born. Great sentimental value to me and if it were to get lost or stolen or damaged I would be upset.

...thank you for reading and replying here. the reason why I asked is...I have to admit I have safe queens. It was never my intention to buy and not wear. sadly, life and priorities changed unexpectedly for me. I didn't...couldn't think about this hobby during that time. years and years went by...
...it is only recently, when back on a even keel and peace of mind, I have rediscovered this forum once again. this is difficult to write as I remember those tough times. anyways, my name is harvey...and I own some safe queens. I feel a little silly admitting all this on a forum to be judged. this may mean I start wearing them... |

I never understood the concept of a safe queen with regards to buying a new watch. As others have said , new watches as a long term investment just don't make sense. The only watches i buy are the ones I want to wear. Some get babied more than others bc of my OCD re: my dressier watches , not bc I am worried about their investment value.
