1965 Speedmaster 105.012 Servicing/Repair

Hi all - I have a 1965 Speedmaster 105.012 CAL .321 that belonged to my father. I have had it serviced a few times over the last couple years at ABC Watchwerks, primarily to fix an issue where it 'speeds up' (no pun intended) and is tracking time faster than it should be. How often are you servicing your Omegas and are these issues common? I feel like every 6-12 months the issue starts occurring again.

When it begins tracking time faster than it should be, how much time does it gain over a 24-hour period?

Time between proper maintenance service should be at least 5 years for your watch. Will you tell us what sort of service is being performed at the more frequent intervals you describe? What is the description of the service on the receipts from ABC Watchwerks?

More information is needed, but should run for years after a FACTORY service. Which is the only type of service I would even consider on such a special watch.

Thank you! I will check the exact gain today/tonight but it seems to be a few hours of gain.

The last time I had the watch serviced was just about 5 years ago and for the past 5 years it has seemed to work well enough (I only wear it once every 2-3 weeks). Before that last service I had to have it serviced 2 separate times within the span of 2 years to resolve the 'speeding up' issue

I will get back in touch with ABC to see exactly what they did in the last service I will probably need to send it back to them!

Thanks for the info. If it's gaining hours over the course of a single day, then the movement is magnetized. It probably came in close proximity to something that generates a very strong magnetic field.

See a local watchmaker and ask to have it demagnetized while you wait. Thank him and leave, and then see what happens over the next 24 hours. I'll bet you a beer it runs perfectly.

Alternatively, you can purchase a demagnetizer yourself for very little money. If your watch has managed to come in close proximity to strong magnetic fields on several occasions, then maybe this is a good investment for you. This is an excellent tip! For $40 seems like it's worth buying regardless. I will try heading into a local watch repair shop and asking them if they'll do it before I buy one.

For awareness, since your last service circa 2016, I think some of the specialists at ABC Watchwerks split off and formed LA Watch Works.

Great to know - I think I saw that mentioned on the forum so I am setting up an appointment with LA Watch Works
