Rolex Air-King, one of the most underrated watches in the world?

I stumbled across this GQ article written last month by L.A. based watch & art columnist, Wes Lang. The article is a short read and makes a compelling case for the Air-King as being one of the most "slept-on" watches in the world due to it's uniqueness compared to the rest of the Rolex line up and price of entry.

Now I'm definitely biased a bit because I love the charm of the Air-King and it's uniqueness. That’s what led me to purchase one from my AD last year after I couldn't keep my mind off of it the first time I saw it. Well that along with the fact that it's not a dime a dozen on wrists out here in L.A. like the Submariner.

I know that the Air-King has a mostly love it or hate it relationship among the TRF community and Rolex aficionado's world wide, but if it was discontinued by Rolex in the near future, would that change anyones perception or feeling towards it? Do you think that we would see it become more sought after or even collectable as time goes on? Or would everyone just be happier that Rolex came about their senses and moved on? Just thinking out loud here .

Here is a link to the GQ Air-King article: https://www.gq.com/story/wes-lang-on...rolex-air-king

I love the uniqueness of it and I actually like that’s it’s the black sheep of the family. I’m sure people will look for it more IF they ever planned to discontinue it. If they don’t I can guarantee there won’t be another like it, take that with a grain of salt lol

It’s definitely unique but I’m unsure if I’d miss it.

Rolex had a number of large posters at Los Angeles Airport promoting Air King last week.

It’s a nice looking watch in my opinion.

I would have no problems wearing it, looks good to me. I'm not at all interested in the popularity / hard to get aspect of the current Rolex lineup. I buy watches to wear and enjoy for a couple of decades, who knows what is popular then if I decide to sell the collection or parts of it.

Not my cup of tea, but I don't want to take a piss on anyone else's taste in watches, so I'll just say de gustibus non disputandum est

I would love no minutes and prefer a 3 ,6,9 only. If that existed, I would be very happy lol

I think Gold crown and green-texted Rolex looks too cartoonish at first when it released. But it's growing on me as it's kind of refreshing of traditional logo.
However, the rest of the watch is too similar to Explorer, DJ and Milgauss to have its own character.

Absolutely love mine. Some say the dial is too busy but say it gives the watch character. Long live the king!!!

It's not for me personally, but I admit that it always looks far better in person than it does in pics (though that wrist shot you posted is one of the best I've seen.)...one thing it does have going for it is the case shape. I recently sold my Milgauss, but do believe that this case is one of the most refined in the entire line-up.

Had an AK and sold it to upgrade to a new Sub date. Really miss it and will probably pick up another when the time is right. Loved the uniqueness and the fit. Dare I say it was more comfortable on my wrist than my Sub date ? Could be, but the Sub isn’t going anywhere.

I really like the current air king. I love that the dial is based on the gauges in the bloodhound ssc land speed record car. And the green rolex text? Perfect. But I'm a car guy who has a soft spot for anything inspired by car things.

I own a polar explorer and would love to add an air king to the collection. I like rolexes that don't look like a stereotypical rolex. I can only take so many subs, datejusts, and explorer Is.

Rolex Air-King, one of the most underrated watches in the world?

That's a reach.

If you like and it makes you happy then it matters not.

This is my first Rolex. I wear it daily. I like it because it is unique. Really liked the added colors to the dial and second hand.

I like wearing mine quite a bit. If they polished the center of the bracelet it'd be even nicer. It's one of my favorite watches to look at and wear at any price range.

Personally love it. I have white Milgauss and still feel the dial is so different it’d be awesome to add to the collection. It’s on my short list for sure... must.stop.buying.watches

At first, I didn't really care for it, but it's definitely growing on me. I love how it embraces its playfulness.

Wow, this thing is getting killed in the polls. And I can see why.

"Air-King" text looks chintzy. Minute numerals every five minutes is way too busy. I don't even mind the yellow and green that much. But the big numbers and text look lame. But if you love it, then good for you!
