Submariner > Speedy-Explorer >OP

If it is your first watch from either brands then get the OP, taste the quality, automatic winding, smooth sweep but OP is although timeless, is also boring and if you ask me 41 is out of proportion, dial is too big, if it was OP39 that we are talking I would say definitely get the OP.

Speedy is interesting, it has the story, not only to tell but to feel, whenever you see a space related news, you look at your wrist or go to your watchbox to wear yours. Bezos and his crew wore Speedies in Blue Orign launch on the 20th for example. It is a chore to wind the movement, chrono although looks cool, is useless for most and I prefer the sweeping seconds to chrono but, there is a charm that is hard to explain with Speedy. If it was Breitling, IWC, JLC chronos, I would say get the OP instead first, but Speedy, tough choice.

If you get the OP, you will find yourself craving for Speedy and you will get it later on, if you get the Speedy, you will find yourself craving for Rolex and you will get it later on. Both are something every watch enthusiast should experience at least for a while even not kept in the collection for long.

My suggestion is, find an AD that sells both Omega and Rolex, since you can get the Speedy on discount, get the Speedy first but put your name on the list for OP or even some other Rolex if you are interested but think hard to get (Explorer or Sub). Speedy will get you the Rolex with reasonable wait time (3-6 months). Once you get the Rolex, if funds are not avaialble to keep both, sell one. If you sell Rolex, you can make money, if you sell Speedy, you won't lose much.

It would depend on what else I had, but first choice for me would be OP if I had nothing else.

Basic entry level Rolex OP41 compared to an icon legend Omega Speedmaster. I don’t know what to say.

Is this your first watch? If so then the Rolex. If you already have a daily and want something special, and a different movement, then the speedy!

The Speedmaster you’ll get hasn’t - but a Daytona could have been to the Rolex24, or Le Mans…

Your original question asks for a choice between a classic Datejust and a very different professional watch.

The closer comparo would be Daytona vs Speedmaster. I’d say Daytona for the movement.

Another “which one” would be Datejust vs Deville Coaxial. I’d say Deville for the movement. But it’s also not hard to look at…

Do you want a chronograph or a plain time watch?

The Speedmaster is a watch icon and I would take that over any OP

Speedy. By 238855 miles. Just a nicer looking watch that, as has been mentioned, can be dressed up or down with different straps.

If manual wind is a pain, ( it isn't), then look at the Speedmaster Racing Master Chronometer versions:

I agree with this. I recently had a milestone that I felt deserved a lifetime watch. Was really close to buying the new Speedy, but I opted for the new Explorer. The latter just felt more appropriate as a milestone watch and as you said, the Speedy feels like something I can always add to the collection. Love the Speedy though. Might be the toughest looking watch when matched with a matte, olive green nato.

Between the two the OP is debating though, I would go Speedy for sure.

The manual wind is one of the best parts of owning a Speedy. It's a more satisfying way of interacting with the complicated machine strapped to your wrist than shaking it up and down.

I’d go Speedy, but I’d be the hesalite version. I just don’t care for those double hour markers on the OP at 3, 6, and 9.

Very different watches. You’re comparing a chrono and a watch with no complications at all.

Rolex OP for the classic clean look …and the wearability to dress up or down.

I purchased a hesalite speedy and a silver OP41 in December and really like them both but if I had to pick one it would be the speedy….love the history and the manual wind.

The OP. I love the color. That color blue might not age well, and 20 years from now people might be like, 'yo, that is so 2020s', but I don't care.

Rolex or Omega

I’d get the Speedmaster but having both would be nice.

Like my Speedy Pro a lot, but I’d go for the OP if I was looking for my one “good” watch. Better water resistance, automatic, longer power reserve and better bracelet make it a more practical daily driver.

As an only watch? OP41. If adding to a collection, then get the Speedy.

OP is one of the most overrated watches out there IMO. It is benefiting from the current demand for SS models. The Tiffany dial is cool, but the prices for a historically cheap and typically discounted model seems a bit much.

I have never been a speedy fan either, but it is for sure a cool watch with undeniable history.

Honestly though, if you’re paying AD prices, 100% OP. IfYou don’t like it, sell it and the speedy is basically free.
