The AD will just sell it to the next on the list quickly

May not remember you by then anyway

If the first AD eventually contacts you, say you 'sort of' lost interest in that model.
They will have NO trouble at all selling <whatever-it-is> almost immediately.
Everyone is happy.
Best to keep quiet about your fortunate find.

One caveat: if first AD placed a special order then its only right to tell them you’ve changed your mind for whatever reason.

I would definitely buy what you can. Don't feel bad. Its the game they make us play. You can always sell that one down the road if your hometown happens to come through for you. If not you got the piece you wanted and did not have to play the game.

There is a famous saying by the Scottish poet Sir Walter Scott..

"
Oh what a tangled web we weave
When first we practice to deceive
"

When/if the AD rings either say:

"Thanks for calling, but I've already purchased one"
or
"Great, I'll be over tomorrow to buy it"

Let's not over think this!

its more on AD1 that didnt come through with the watch in time for you. If it were me I'd be straight up tell her the same story you told us and then ask her to get you something else. I dont think any SS sports is a middle of the pack difficulty piece, but if it really isnt that difficult and you need it to build relationship, then buy and flip one.

I don't get posts like this. If you don't buy the watch, someone else will. It doesn't hurt the AD.

I buy my cars from my local dealer. If they don't have and can't get what I want, then I buy it elsewhere (think rare BMW M cars). When I go back in a year or two to buy another car, do they refuse to sell it to me because I went elsewhere? No. They understand it's just business, you do what you have to do, and I'm still a valued repeat customer.

The problem is that some people have forgotten who the customer is.

I think it's all about appearing to be a serious buyer who doesn't flake and won't make SA look bad (if this is an allocation piece which they need to request access to from management). SA lobbies manager to allocate to you, then you pass, they look bad.

On the other hand, we don't even know what model this is. For all we know, we're talking uncommon-but-not-allocation-territory like a stainless DJ41 or an OP in black, blue or silver.

Amazing, you find what you are looking for and then you are concerned about relationships with the other AD .
This means you are not really interested in the reference you can find ,but want to use it as an entrance ticket to hard to finds .

How does it mean that? It means I love the reference I got but I also know I’ll want other references in the future including for my wife. And that if AD1 was going to help me out I’d like to operate with integrity/honesty back, even if ADs don’t care about customers same way in return. I don’t prioritize reciprocity. I prioritize acting in every situation as best I can. Anyway, it’s a shame you’re just ready to go with the least favorable interpretation of things, but I guess that’s the nature of this forum (and presumably your mindset). Thank you to the others who actually offered constructive and helpful answers. Will let AD1 know the truth in case they are actually trying on my behalf as it is right thing to do. Then whatever happens, happens.

For those asking, here is the model. Wanted the black over the white as I’ve already got many white dials. I love it so far. Wears flatter than my 124060 which is great itself and also I like the clasp being a bit smaller/shorter. AR coating and lug redesign pushed me over top from previous models. Never owned an explorer 2 before and it’s already one of my faves!!

To my amazement they have it for me.

Now I was in a tough spot. Do I pin my hopes on AD1 coming through (great vibes but no guarantee), or do I take the bird in the hand?

I went went with the latter.

Problem now is this - I was really excited about building a relationship with hometown AD. Now I've got to explain I am no longer interested in the piece, and will seem like a flake.

Any idea how to handle?
I think you are fine with the truth, but creative storytelling can always be entertaining as well. "So a crazy thing happened... I had mentioned this watch many times to Bob, my lifelong friend and the best man at my wedding, and to my surprise he found it at his local dealer in ___ and sent it to me as a completely unexpected gift. So I wanted to let you know I am no longer interested in the xxx, but I would like to be considered for a yyy instead. I think the two would make a great collection". Of course if there is not "yyy" in your mind then you can skip the last part.

as others have said, you gotta go with a bird in the hand. i felt confident getting a new daytona from my local dealer, having purchased 2 rolexes from them. after waiting 18 months, i found out they lost their franchise and i had to start over from scratch.

Thanks all for the helpful replies!!! I have just alerted AD1 that I got unexpectedly lucky here and no longer need the Exp2 black new version. Hopefully that watch - whenever or if ever it would have come in - makes someone else happy!! Maybe one of you guys!!! Appreciate the great inputs here.

I would pick up the piece at the 2nd AD that had it. Deal with the 1st AD if they come through. It is hard to blame anyone for buying anything from an AD these days considering the current supply shortage(s). Enjoy your watch!

I would have done the same thing with one extra step. Asked them to keep you in mind on the next Rolex you would like for your collection.

Congratulations on your new purchase.

Yes. Buy the watch from the seller who wants to sell it to you now, as opposed to at some future date, as yet unknown.

An additional suggestion: if you are seriously considering turning down a watch which you could buy at MSRP today, is it passible that maybe you don't want the watch as much as you thought? Your hind brain might be trying to tell you something.

Edit: just saw the result. Congratulations.

What, are you his boyfriend?

He doesn't care about you. He cares about your money. He didn't have the watch you were looking for. Someone else did therefore you bought it. Grow a pair.

No biggy. Be honest and let them know what your next piece you want is. Trust me they won’t have trouble selling it. Ha!
