Screw down buttons on Daytona - question

The screw down buttons on the Daytona; what mechanically happens when i screw them down with respect to watertightness?

if the buttons go through the case, how do they keep it watertight? there doesnt seem to be a gasket on the screw down.

thanks,

mark

The gaskets are "O" rings around the shaft of the pusher rods.. (there also may be a gasket on the backside of the rod, inside the case)

If you press the pushers under water, it deflects the "O" ring a bit and allows water to go past the rod and backside washer and into the movement..

Screwing the pushers only locks the pusher in place keeping them from being depressed..

So really in day to day use ( without water ) you don't have to screw them down??

Martin, thats a good question.
Look forward to the answer,my only concern is would the watch remain waterproof, with the locks not screwed down?

I often wear the buttons open but not for swimming.

Yes....The Daytona is waterproof/resistant unless the pushers are pushed under water, although not to the same depth rating.. Probably no more than any other decent chrono

The screw down feature was added in the 70's specifically to keep the pushers from being used underwater and helped with the eventual rating for 100m to match with the rest of the Oyster line..

Sometimes after showering I notice the crowns are open, but this is perfectly normal. I understand without the crowns screwed in they are resistant up to 10m

I'd say that the Daytona is splash proof when the chrono buttons are unscrewed, meaning that the watch would not be harmed if you are wearing it while you are out in the rain.
