What is this Rolex I've accquired???

Hi peeps

Stumbled upon this forum whilst searching for information on the Rolex I've accquired. I want to get an opinion on my watch to see if its worth servicing, but not really sure how much its worth. Been told Rolex will charge around £300-400 for servicing, and the watch itself was only worth £600(according to the watchmaker I took it to). Would people give me second opinion if I posted pictures and details of it?
I'm brand spanking new to Rolex's and not really sure what I've got here ...but it is a genuine Rolex, that I'm sure of.

thx in advance!

Sorry if it photos arent that sharp, wished I had access to my brothers SLR, iphone will have to do!

Been told its a 1570 calibur, strap has been changed twice so the original 'croc' leather no longer exist. The gold buckle remains though. Oh, it was bought back in 1976.

Thanks for looking.

Nice watch-- I used to have one with the same tt with gold dial look. Rolex service runs about $550, and I have mine done by a local guy for about $450. If you like the watch, this one could last you for 30 years+, so servicing it kind of depends on how much you like it.

As to the strap, it's nice that it still has a Rolex buckle, but leather straps rot away pretty fast if you wear the watch a lot. I don't remember there being anything all that special with a Rolex strap, except the price.

You have a nice Datejust that appears to be on good condition.

Nobody can answer if it is worth it to you to have it properly serviced and put in close to new condition.. everybody thinks differently about these things..

Personally, I believe that almost any Rolex should be properly serviced, and if it was mine, I would spend the 600USD on it, even if it was only worth that... I have a couple of watches that cost me more than they are worth in the marketplace to restore, but, as an enthusiast/hobbyist, it is worth it to me; just like any other expensive hobby..

However, yours, with an original Rolex strap buckle, is worth much more than your watchmaker estimated..

Nice! Worth $600. I don't think so - it's worth more. How much I don't know - but more than $600.

If you like it have it serviced and enjoy it for your lifetime and pass it on.

The heck with him, I'll give you 601 for it!

Seriously, it looks like a nice example of an earlier Datejust. That watch should clean up nicely and be worth a lot more than your watchmaker advised you. The 1500 range as quoted by Michael above would be about right.

Classic and elegant. Maybe steer clear of that watchmaker...the Rolex service is very close to true cost but his estimate of worth may have an ulterior motive. Can't believe he'd be that far off - it's worth about twice his guesstimate.
