Not quite. Similar to CB, in that it is communicating with other folks over radio, however there are licensing requirements and a much broader range of frequencies and power levels available. If you have a few minutes, here is the wiki which touches upon what the hobby is. It has many facets depending on your interests. Like watch collecting, it is a hobby you can easily spend anywhere from hundreds to tens of thousands of dollars.

Manofsteel.. I have never seen anyone at the gym with a cigar or drink in hand but I would love to see a pic of all three. The funniest thing Ive seen was this older guy, probably there to get out of the house, was reading the paper in between his very slow sets. If it wasn't a no no to take a vid or pic of this I would have.
Judy, I don't do all 3 together, lol. I have your gym story beat, a lot 2 months ago there was an older guy on the eliptical watching a movie... while eating a bag of Fritos corn chips and sipping on a Gatorade

Monthly poker game with friends (...I am a terrible player so I prefer giving my money to friends rather than strangers).

I've been playing in the same home game for more than 20 years and last year i gave it up and it feels great!! At first I just needed a break, but after a few months I didn't miss it, and honestly if not for poker I wouldn't have been very close to those gents, so now I'm done for good.

Had the same epiphany about football pools and gambling on sports. While I'm a pretty good poker player I'm a horrible gambler (poker played correctly is not gambling) so giving up football pools and placing bets on games was a relief and allowed me to start enjoying football again.

Why do I need to pull my hair out because the Raiders end up covering, or Minnesota kicks a last second field goal to wreck my card. It was all foolish so I gave it up and I've not regretted one second.

If I had cooler friends I'd start another poker game but honestly I can live without it.

CB's are still used by truckers and others. There is a limited frequency range those can operate in along with distance barriers - probably a few miles at best. No license is required.

The licensing requirements these days for a Technician license almost makes amateur radio seem like a CB.

There is a 35 question multiple choice test that is based on a larger question pool where everyone has access. Most just memorize the Q&A either during a "ham cram," 7 hour study session right before taking the exam or on their own. In addition, the requirements of morse code was removed from the test years ago. Today's operators have it easy.

There are three different licenses (technician, general, extra). Each upgrade allows you access to more frequencies. A general class license is the most you would need. You can talk to anyone in the world bouncing off repeaters and such.

You can learn more here:

http://www.arrl.org/ham-radio-licenses

GMRS also requires a no test license and is what most people are familiar with when they see those handheld "walkie talkies" at the store or in use by parents and kids at a park. These require line of sight operation and may get a range of >5 miles without obstruction or 1 mile in obstructed areas (forests, buildings, etc.)

To learn more about various radio frequencies you can visit this site.

Edit: just realized you're in Canada. The comments I made are for the U.S. Not sure what the requirements are but nonetheless it's a fun hobby if you're interested in this type of stuff.

Watching the workings of some honeybees when time permits:

rolexguynfl-bee.jpg

They seem to work at their own pace, which doesn't produce much reward other than watching them dart about. The spend more time watching the clock than working I guess.
