Steve Lukather’s Rosanna solo. Short. SWEET. Often imitated rarely duplicated. Also a somewhat underrated/under appreciated guitarist for those not in the know.

Can't disagree with any of these, excellent choices. The only ones I can think of that haven't been listed are:

Back in Black, AC/DC
Soulshine, Allman Brothers Band
Layla, Derek & Dominoes

Top 5 would be difficult with so many to chose from. My favorite guitar solo is Wayne Perkins on The Rolling Stones "Hand of Fate".

Some great ones here. My favs depend on my flavor of the month, but this list is lacking some great guitarists:

RHCP/John Frusciante - Californication, or any live jam with Flea
John Mayer - Guess I just feel like, or Dancing in a burning room live
SRV - the entirety of Texas Flood, or any YouTube video of him playing any song live
Pink Floyd/David Gilmour (mentioned already, but some other songs) - Time, Marooned

Not the most “shred” songs, but to me these songs are all textbook sound and feel for each of the above world class guitarists. All these guys are so enjoyable to watch as they do their thing live

I actually don’t think Mayer gets the credit he deserves...he is quite the talent...even in spite of your body is a wonderland.

Eric Clapton was asked how it felt to be one of the greatest guitarist ever and he said you should be asking Prince what that feels like!

I've heard that many times too, but I can't confirm. From what I've heard about Clapton's character, I doubt he would he ever pay such respect to another. So...if it were true, it would be an incredible compliment. That being said, Clapton's guitar prowess is great.

As a musician I took those expressions as thinking Prince was little too cute by half during his performance. There's a very fine line between delivering your best vs trying to show up others and turning it into a head cutting contest.

He never actually said that, but it has become somewhat of an urban legend. Similar quotes have been attributed to Hendrix about several different guitarists

I suppose you'd have to know a man's intention to judge. Just as an aside, I once watched a Prince interview where he was asked who his favorite guitarists were. The first name out of his mouth.....Dhani Harrison.

True, and Prince was one extremely talented musician. But the concert was for George, not a platform to show off your hottest pyrotechnics. I know I'm being too damn critical.

Not sure if I missed it but I'm surprised there is no love for Randy Rhoads, his work on Blizzard of Ozz was unreal.

Since I'm thinking about Ozzy, I'd also throw out Zakk Wylde on "No More Tears", the way he goes 0-60 on that one gets me every time although its not the longest solo.

An amazing performance, no doubt, but perhaps not for that night, imo.

Y'all have some great and diverse musical tastes and this is a great question. So many to choose from. Also consider;

Dick Dale Misirlou
Jimi Hendrix The Star Spangled Banner
Joe Bonamassa Further on Up the Road with Eric Clapton
The Eagles Hotel California. "A bad Yelp Rating with a guitar solo."

Too many to list but off the top of my head:

1) Megadeth - Tornado of Souls
2) Steve Vai - For the Love of God
3) Kiko Loureiro - Dilemma
4) Scorpions - The Sails of Charon
5) SRV - Little Wing

Two I overlooked: John Fogerty (CCR), ‘I Put A Spell On You’, and Dave Davies’s naughty-schoolboy scribble of a solo on The Kinks’ ‘All Day And All Of The Night’.

Great list! We have similar taste in music, but I wasn't sure if anyone here would know who Tom Verlaine is!

I've watched that video many times, and it has always sort of rubbed me the wrong way for exactly the reason you stated.

Prince also sat in with "The Roots" on Jimmy Fallon's show, and borrowed their guitar players beloved vintage Epiphone, and threw it into the air after the song, and it crashed to the ground, destroying it. That's about the biggest dick move you can possible do to a fellow musician, very uncool.
