Slight "Grinding" When Winding Exp II (216570)

Since getting the watch in September and wearing it nearly daily, I've been nagged by a slight "gravelly" feedback when winding. It's like there is an occasional mechanical friction or grind during each spin of the crown. It's not bad and it is far from continuous. But it is felt at least once or twice during each turn. I initially thought that this was due to the newness of the piece but it continues today after plenty of usage. I wouldn't post about it except that I have my wife's new DJ to use for comparison. Her watch is liquid smooth during winding. Otherwise my watch is fine other than running 5 secs/day fast when worn. Thanks!

AD says “not good!”. It went out to the RSC today.

Just curious if it was the crown O ring that was making that noise? Please keep us posted on what was discovered during service.

Will do...if they tell me. I’m not sure how detailed the RSC invoice will be.

There won’t be an invoice on warranty work. They will do what they think best and then return it to the AD.

Most likely a reversing wheel that is toast.

Is that something I could have broken by misuse? Although I do seem to remember it from the very first moment with the watch.

My OP39 does this too. Am curious to find out what the problem is.

Same here. I've noticed my GMT does this while my Explorer doesn't.

My new Sky Dweller felt a bit gritty when being wound. So I left it sit and wind down for a couple of days - smooth as butter...

It may not be as simple as that of course.

Interesting. Maybe that grinding sound, at least in some cases, is the slip clutch which is there to prevent forcing and over winding. I wouldn't say mine is "smooth as butter" but also would not say I feel like it's grinding. I wear my watch constantly so it may just always be fully wound. I'll have to try and make a conscious effort to let it wind down and see how it feels

Nothing like a good ad and warranty.

It is an effort with a new watch like the Sky Dweller not to wear it or touch it!

However, letting it wind down certainly put my mind at rest about the gritty winding. I am not THAT active, so I felt sure it wouldn't have been fully wound - but it was and is obviously very efficient at winding itself.

I tried letting it wind down with my OP. No difference. Still has the slight grinding. The weird thing is that it still keeps great time, around 1.4 secs fast per day. I am planning to send it in right before the warranty expires, but i am still curious to know if this is something to worry about or not.

My BLRO Pepsi is at RSC right now for the same problems. It happened to my Explorer 1 (Mk II) a few years back. Rolex will take care of it, but they won't tell you in detail what is wrong. Might be too little lubrication?

Luckily I have plenty of watches to hold me over.

If it is NOT buttery smooth and silent, it is NOT right.

Happened with my Explorer 214270, Mk1, and I took it to RSC. They didn't say what exactly happened but I think it got magnetized.

My watch is back! It was actually ready in March but the store had closed by the time I was able to return the call. It's nice to have it back and also nice to know how a Rolex is supposed to wind: buttery smooth.

My 4030 Daytona did the same thing just before the mainspring broke.

That's interesting - just checked my SD43 and whilst there is is a slight friction or drag on winding which I understood to be the norm, it certainly does not feel like it's grinding. Must keep an eye.

I wouldn't say mine is gritty per se, but my SD has almost always had a slight drag, or light clicking sensation when winding. Almost similar to some manual wind watches that I own. It wasn't like this for the first couple of times, but it developed over a short amount of time. It's very subtle.
