I did try to phone them and no answer. I shall try again. I agree that it sounds like the pre-ordering service price includes VAT. So, I guess when one shows up to claim the item and pay for it, if you have a boarding pass leaving the UK then you don't have to pay VAT on the item.

To be clear the ordering is direct with Rolex boutique not via the Heathrow shopping service. |

I plan to buy my first Rolex at Heathrow airport when traveling to Switzerland (outside EU). The sales person told me that I will not pay the VAT making it almost a 17% discount. She also told me that technically, i should pay the VAT when returning to the UK however she said that there is very little chance I'll be stopped and checked at the customs (very random) but if that happens she strongly advise me to wear my new Rolex on my wrist as they will only check what's inside my luggage not on me. Is she right or is it almost certain I will have to pay the VAT when I return to the UK?

You won't have to pay when you return unless you declare it which would be the ethical way. You could always post back the box and papers from Switzerland before returning.
What watch are you wanting to purchase? |

I was there on 15th August and the sales lady told me they had a sold a SS Daytona earlier that day. I did receive a laugh when I asked about subs though.

You can always look at the dynamic currency conversion the store offers, pay in local currency and then check your statement to see the charge when its put into you currency by your CC company. Its always less when you don't do it at the store. according to wikipedia, it can be up to 18% of a markup ...DCC allows the merchant, merchant's bank or ATM operator to charge a markup on the exchange rate used, sometimes by as much as 18%. FYI, i used to have a US CC that had foreign transaction fees. It was charged on ALL transactions that occur outside the US, regardless of the currency used. So you could pay in USD using dynamic currency conversion (get hit with that mark up) and still get a foreign translation fee too, because the card was used outside the US. None of my cards now have foreign transaction fees at all though.

Good point and I've been advised two things: - I do the ethical way and I pay the VAT when I return (no point to buy in the airport) - I wear the Rolex on my wrist at the airport on my way back to the UK and I post the box and papers from my address in France to the UK. |

People get caught all the time. Some countries are more lax on declaring and paying fees, the UK isnt one of them.

However and for the principle, I dont see how you could get caught in the airport if you wear your watch in your wrist, like everybody, and dont have the box and papers in your luggage. |

Supplying a bank statement, receipt or whatever could be necessary and they will also show you paid no tax. they do stuff like that with cash all the time. They see a large amount of currency even if you are bringing it in legally and they can say prove where it came from and hold it until you do.

Anyway, only people permanently living outside the EU can benefit from the tax free price at the airport and that's it. |

UK customs IMO is way, way more strict than US customs.

At T5 heathrow at few weeks ago I asked for availability of Sports Models. an unnamed staff member told me they get an average of one submariner a month to sell at T5. not sure if true.
