models with high premium in secondary market

so everyone knows what to expect when it comes to the ss daytonas and the premium we see those going for in the grey market... Is anyone else surprised to see how high the prices are for the ss sky dwellers? Are there any other models that have this kind of premium or that we expect to see at a premium like that in the future (maybe Hulk?)

Not really. Any new rolex in ss seems to command a premium other than the air king debacle that came out a few years back....

true. Anything in SS always go for a premium in the grey market for the first year or two. Sometimes 3, but it does slow down. As they make more and more flood into the market the price will go down. The only issue now is Rolex recently has been holding back on production specially on there SS watches.

The SD43 saw big premiums upon release. Seems like all new Rolexes do this when they're new to the market. Once Rolex gets supply ramped up the watches fall back to retail prices levels, and then often to a discount on the gray market. Took about 6 months for the SD43 to fall back to retail price levels.

Not to be combative or rude, but can you please cite your source for Rolex intentionally holding back on production? From everything I've read here Rolex never comments on ANYTHING. Is there some credible industry analysis out there to support this?

Do a search on UK threads in particular where miniscule supply has been ongoing since Brexit last year, and yes many countries now have members here noticing supply is far less than before in ADs too, either due to a dubious strategy or some production issue.

not saying what they said are the truth, but I had 3 AD telling me that Rolex production has gone down and they won't be getting any shipment the rest of the year. One dealer told me that's coming from Rolex regional sales director that he is close to.

Could it not be that the AD are keeping hold of the sought after pieces for their special customers.

I have a feeling the price increase of the initial releases are all due to the hype on these types of forums and WIS rushing to get their hands on the initial releases. No general public person would even know about the SD43, for example, or how nice it is to own, to go out of his/her way to buy it from grey market at a higher price.

Once the WIS / forum markets have been saturated, then the price settles and one can see the watch at the AD.

Just my 2 cents.

One major flaw in your argument; the WIS community is never satisfied and therefore is never saturated!

Yes. As Daytona-C has proven!

The major flaw for me is that I am slowly but surely joining the WIS, and must learn to live with all these sad emotions and never ending desires that I never had to deal with before!

Not quite there yet, but almost there.

I have been thinking about buying the SD43 very much, even put my name on the list at the local AD (although I somehow don't believe they even have a list for it.)

But I can pick one up from DavidSW, right now, for AD OTD price (MSRP+Tax) plus an additional 3% or so. My delay in purchasing one has more to do with my deciding if I like to have one or not, than availability and pricing of secondary market.

I think it's more than WIS, it's the rich insta kids and the wannabes that are also driving up prices, hype and demand. Wasn't like this a few years ago and number of WIS has not suddenly increased.

There's also a possible argument that Rolex is withdrawing cases from sale now as they want to input new movements into these models for Basel.

Sadly not in the Rest of the world, however.

SD43 are relatively easy to get, come visit the other side of the pond.

Back OT, some say high prices are a cure for high prices. Let the market decide what the price of something is.

Thanks!!! Funny, it's often attributed to the Hell's Angels but it clearly didn't originate with them.

I actually read an article posted by the Hong Kong Watch Snob dated 18.8.2017 media add hksnob@yahoo.com.hk and the Hong Kong Watch Fever group FB clearly mentioning Rolex has decreased production of the SS Sports models by 40% in the beginning of 2017. Naturally all pre owned SS models are also up by >10% in the last two quarters. The Rolex watches specifically disclosed ( Not surprisingly I guess ) are Ref 116610 LN ,116610LV ,116710 BLNR , Daytona B+W dials , DSSD both regular Black & D Blue versions
