Servicing
Folks,
Please don't hate my question and please give me as much information as you can because this is my first luxury piece servicing. I have a Rolex explorer ref 114270 Y serial 2002. It has never been serviced yet. Its kepps decent time, dial up for about 14 hours is +4 and during the day it gains about 1 second more, it usually between 5-6 seconds per day. I am starting to consider servicing it but really not sure whether to do it at my watchmaker who will take very little to no payment for it, so it will be very cheap. He will also pressure test it. Or to take it to Rolex for servicing which will take a lot of time and be expensive. Is there any real value impact of taking it to a not official Rolex AD? Is there anything I should know before making this decision? Thank you in advance! |

Depends on your watchmakers qualifications.
Some shops do a "cheap" service by simply taking the watch down to major components, ultra-sonic cleaning, then re-assembling and oiling without checking tolerances or replacing any expendable parts. Of course, many do completely disassemble the watch, have a Rolex parts account, and replace any worn or out of tolerance arts.. Where and who services your watch should be as careful a consideration as when you purchased it..

Independant watchmakers have access to Rolex parts !! Tell me in which country ... surely not in europa....
And once you asked a independant to touch your Rolex, don't try a AD Rolex to work on it... once again it's what happens here.. ;-) |

I personally would never touch a Rolex that was not serviced by a RSC. You will also get a two year warranty and a nice little pouch!

Local watchmaker can clean & relube but if he doesn't have a Rolex parts account he can't get genuine spareparts to replace any worn parts. Substituting non-original parts will impact resale value adversely, especially if buyer takes it to RSC to get checked for authenticity.

i would get the service done by RSC. Its going to cost more but it will be done right. My rough math for a 2002 watch being serviced in 2017 makes the cost of maintaining your purchase somewhere around $4 a month.

Absolutely agree. It is a little pricey but they will do it right. However, Rolex will want to get your Rolex back to 'looking like new'. As long a everything is original on the watch, you can just say, I want it serviced only. The price will range from $400 to over $1000 if they change out some parts.

I got my M serial 114270 back from RSC about a week ago. I purchased the watch used (never serviced) earlier this year. I requested a movement service, and a very light polish on the bezel and case. RSC did an excellent job on the watch, and it looks and functions perfectly. Cost was $750.00. I just sent them my Y serial 16710 (also never serviced), and I'm eagerly awaiting its return!

Spending $1000 for maintenance on a 15 year old watch (that is worth what, $4k or so?) is not something I would do. But if the bill from RSC would be about $400, that would be my first choice. I also wouldn't let just any watchmaker / jeweler that claims they can work on a Rolex to work on my watch. If you can find a local jeweler that comes highly recommended and has proven track record of working on Rolex in the past, (your local watch community, if any, or local Yelp might help), that might be your most sensible option. There are also other watchmakers on this forum that have great reputation that you can send your watch to, but your location being in Israel and all, not sure how that would work for you.

ABC warchwerks, LAWW, and Venassa's shop would all be perfectly acceptable independent shops to send your watch too. There are some examples of Rolex doing less than stellar work and if you want to keep your dial/hands on older pieces RSC is out.

I wish I had the option.
It seems only Rolex has the capability to open up a DSSD |

The OP is in Israel. Not sure how practical it would be to send to the USA for service. I imagine shipping would cost a small fortune.

My advice: Your watch served you well since 2002 - why not ensure that it keeps running properly by servicing at RSC.
It won’t be cheap - that is true, but you’ll get the Rolex service warranty of two years, corresponding documentation evidencing work done and a nifty green pouch! Go ahead. Send to RSC. Your watch will thank you. |

A service performed by an RSC is in some ways a right of passage from an ownership experience.
If in doubt go with the RSC then you will know for sure from your experience. |
