I'm 37 and I bought my first Rolex when I was 29 - it was a mid sized Oyster Perpetual. After my trip to New Zealand 3 years later I bought a black dial Explorer II (that my dad now has) and managed to sell the mid size on ebay (and get my money back!). In the next few years I bought and sold a few more Rollies.

In between I got into Panerai and had a PAM2D and a Pre-V 5218-201/A Logo. My dad also has the PAM2 now and I decided to sell the Logo as it was just too much money sitting on my wrist when I could use the funds for more important things.

Now I'm back with just one watch - a black/black GMTII. Makes it really difficult when someone posts 'What are you wearing today?'

If I could buy another watch it would be a 1675 GMT from my birth year, but I am saving for something else so no watches for the foreseeable future!

Hi Friends

I wanted a rollie ever since i was in law school and the first summer clerking job i got, my managing partner had a sub date on. He had the class, cars, women and attitude. I asked him about the sub at our xmas party and he told me "it has served me well". That sealed it for me as i always thought rollies were expensive and i would be content with a tag.

So i hunted around looking for some advice and found that in little ole New Zealand there lived a person by the name of JJ who quickly responded to my email and advised me to get the ss sub (as initially i was going to get the cheapest rollie i could...)Love the watch and always have a lot of respect for JJ who got told the aAD i was a serious buyer and i scored 20% off list on the ss sub. Got it for my 24th bday which was just after getting my first job as a lawyer.

I got my first Rolex -- a stunning black-faced Datejust -- some years back at a mall in the city I lived in in China. It was $800 and I had either paid a lot for the best damned fake imaginable, or gotten the deal of the century. Fortunately, it was the latter.

As some of you may know, the Chinese can be very avid gamblers over Mah Jong, and there were many MJ parlors in the mall. This particular jeweler specialized in giving these gentlemen ready cash for their valuables in the event that they required such, shall we say, immediately.

If you've been to Shanghai, Beijing, Guangdong within the past seven or so years, you will know there are many Chinese who have recently come into more money than they know what to do with. Thus, a surfeit of Rolexes (and high-stakes gambling, apparently).

Anyway, I'm in my 30s and have had that Rolex (I am wearing it now) since I was in my late 20s.

I worked (and work now) in the finance arena, and a good, non-flashy watch is really a minimum requirement.

I'm 27. I bought my first when I was 24. It served me very well for 2.5 years. I got the upgrade bug and jumped on a TT YM with blue dial. As stunning as it was, I missed dealy the 16610, as this was my first Rolex. I couldn't take it any longer. I sold the TT YM and went back to the sub date. I'm happy with my choice, but long for the day that I won't be forced to sell one Rolex to own another.

I'm 46. I think I was born wanting a sub or a sea dweller, must be a boy thing. Anyway 10 years ago, I bought a 12 yo GMTII. The dealer did not have a sub so the GMT was a compromise but that watch has been wonderful. Last week I bought a brand new sd, in the end I preferred it to the sub. The GMT will be put away for my son so he won't have to wait until he's 36 before he gets to own his first Rolex. Having said that, buying your first new Rolex is an experience, taking off the seals, putting on the pristine watch, then checking the back every day to see how the hologram is wearing!

Cool idea...

I'm 37.

1st Rolex - Last year SeaDweller.
2nd Rolex - Last year for wife Ladies Date just.
3rd Rolex - Last year for wife SS Sub Date.
4th Rolex - Last year for me - 1675 GMT Pepsi
5th Rolex - This year for wife - GMT Master II.
6th Rolex - This year for me - SS Sub Date.
7th Rolex - This year for me - 1680 SS Date - with bogus dial... sending back to seller :((((

Number 8 will most likely be a genuine 1680 RED Letter SUb.

I'm new to Rolex, but a big fan.

I just turned 46. I bought a TTDJ as a "divorce" present to myself when I was 29, which I kept for about 7 years. I've been wearing a Baume & Mercier Riveria since, but have really been missing a Rolex for the last couple of years. So, in three weeks my new TTRG Datejust will be in. I can hardly wait.

Hi Chris and welcome to TRF. Where ary you located in NY? In the city, or as the city dwellers say, "upstate"? Everything outside of NYC is considered upstate to them. We all know that it really means beautiful places like Old Forge and Lake Placid.

BTW, I'm in central NYS.

51 and my first Rolex in the past 10 days! But, thanks to this board I made up for lost time and bought another this week. Have had a couple of Maurice Lacroix--nice dress watches and bought a bizillion $$ worth of Yurman for my wife. Mostly into cars--have had 3 Vipers and 2 Vettes recently. Once I got the handle on the abbreviations/inside jokes, I have really enjoyed this board. Terry

Hi, I am city boy, or close to at least, good old Brooklyn. Your right Lake Placid is beautiful, hit it on the way back from Quebec.

Thanks for the welcome, very excited about the new purchase, there are two pieces that I have always been fond of, the Daytona White dial, and sub tt with a blue dial.

Hi, thanks alot, I will definitely be posting some pics.

I would love to grab the blue sub, sooner then later, however I think my wife would disown me.

Maybe one of my stocks will shoot up.

Good luck, Chris. I used to own the TT Blue Sub.....but got rid of it only in favour of the TT Blue YM. Sorry, just couldn't afford to keep both. But the Blue Sub and white Daytona combo would be lethal, man!!

On my last birthday slightly less than 2 months ago, I was 21 for the 42nd time.

I came late to this addiction. Didn't buy my first Rolex until mid 2003. It was a vintage TT DJ with champagne dial and printed Roman numbers on a black strap. That was quickly followed by another vintage TT DJ with white dial, raised Romans and a Jubilee bracelet. Then came my personal ultimate: Black/Black GMT-II (the only Rolex I have purchase NIB). After that came a black dial/diamond marker YG DD (also vintage). And that's only the Rolexes I've acquired in just over three years. Not to mention the JLC, GP, Breitling and a couple other minor ones.

This is my real problem. When I get an addiction, I get it bad. I can resist anything except temptation.

Hi, Chris and welcome to TRF. Stick around and enjoy the fun. If you were lucky enough to score an SS Daytona at retail, you ought to take that streak to Vegas. You could do some serious damage at the tables there with that kind of luck.
