1978 Watch Recommendations

I have a close friend turning 40 this year and I would love to surprise him with a birth year watch. I am looking for recommendations in the $1K to $2K price range. His current line up is a black Explorer II and a Tudor BB ETA. Obviously for the price range I am looking it wont be a Rolex so any brand is welcome.

How do you intend to verify the year?

I would assume most watches would have some form of serial number I could look up. I am basically just looking for brands that would fit in with his current lineup that I may not currently know of and I could research from there.

You can ball park it on Model # but you need the individual manufacturers serial # to determine when it was built. Omega's are a possible place to start, check ebay for models and their website for narrowing down the build year.

You don't have to buy from ebay and probably shouldn't unless you fully buy the seller but it's a good place to research.

You can quickly ascertain the production year AND month from Seiko serial numbers (if you know the decade the watch was made, which isn't hard to do). There's quite a bit to choose from in 1978, from cool dive watches and chronographs to the last of the Hi-Beat Lord Marvel series and more. Unfortunately the King Seiko line was discontinued by 1978 and the Grand Seiko line was on hiatus from mid-70s until 1988 (both victims of Seiko's quartz revolution, ironically), but you can still get a great quality watch with in-house movement for well under $1k

Omega Seamaster or Seiko 6309 from 1978 can be had for your budget

Thanks everyone. I did Google also I just figured some of you here may have some good brands to start with as well. I think I will aim for a nice Seiko from that time period.
