Which Speedmaster
Hello,
I've recently grown to love the speedmaster. From a collector stand point, which modern speedmaster is best as a collector piece (holding value, looks, etc.). I love the look of the "Panda" 329.33.44.51.04.001 and I think it will hold value well... Though, I also love the moonwatch history... Just wanted to get some thoughts here. Thanks! |

The one that speaks to you is the one you should. Go try some on - that said, most speedmasters hold their value well after the initial hit. Try picking one up pre-loved or grey.

Very cool watch. That would make a dynamite choice, I think.
For reference, this is the model of the OP's interest: |

As a one and only Speedmaster I would go with the SS 42 mm version on a bracelet with sapphire crystal and case back with the automatic movement. The watch has enough of the history but is also updated with the movement and crystal.

Love that Speedmaster. I wouldn't get hung up on the value thing - buy what you like. That's one of the best looking Omegas I have seen. If you are concerned about any potential drop in value buy used.

There's a 42mm sapphire sandwich automatic? I thought they were all manual wind?

Buy one of each.
No? OK, then as others said, buy the one that speaks to you. If you love it, then resale will not be a concern because you'll never sell it. However, if you want to buy new, good discounts can usually be found in the gray market, just try to be careful and get it from a dealer that provides the warranty card so that you have the Omega warranty. Used is almost always cheaper, unless it needs a service or other repair. As the price difference on most Speedmasters between a nice used one and a gray market new one usually isn't great, I just go new. Shiny.

Speedmaster Professional. Hesalite crystal, steel case back, manual wind and caliber 1861. This is the model closest to the real NASA moon watch. I'm toying with the idea of buying one...

Get the Hesalite version with the steel case back & SS bracelet. The reference 311.30.42.30.01.005 comes in beautiful presentation box with 2 nylon straps, a loop/monicole, medallion, strap change tool & warranty card. You can find one BRAND NEW on Chrono24 20%-25% off retail price $5350. I saw one today from a dealer in Japan for 29% off retail. IMO they're a steal.

I went to an Omega boutique in LA today. I tried on the moonwatch... it did nothing for me. The flat black dial wasn’t great and the bracelet felt cheap. The watch overall didn’t have a heft to it compared to Rolex models.
I did like the moonwatch version with the clear back. The movement looked pretty and the winding was admittedly satisfying. I tried to like the speedmaster but I expected higher quality. Am I the only one on this?

That’s the only Omega I like. I saw it on a rubber strap, and it’s on my list.
