Buying a nice Watch on holiday hypothetically

Say you saw a nice watch on your holidays and you bought it. You decide to wear the watch for the remainder of your holidays. You then get on a pane with the watch you bought on holiday still on your wrist and go home.

You know what I'm saying here right? Is this an easy thing to do?

Speaking hypothetically of course!

Yep, got it. Ship the box back home, put the warranty card in your wallet and enjoy looking at the watch on your wrist on the way home... hypothetically speaking of course

From a US perspective, your mileage may vary.

The times I've purchased a nice watch overseas, I have "declared" that I have goods over $800 on my entry paperwork. Upon handing it to the Customs Border Patrol agent, they just said "Thanks" and waived me on.

I don't think they are worried too much about me and $500 of import duty. They are looking for the gal with twenty sedated pythons in her bag, or the guy with a backpack full of fentanyl.

I'm an exporter in a highly regulated industry. I can't afford even a brief negative encounter at the border.

95% chance you’ll walk through unchallenged. Depends whether you’re willing to risk it. Not sure of the consequences if you get caught.

Anyway Rolex’s work out cheaper when bought in GBP and there’s slim chance you’ll get offered any desirable watches as a tourist in a foreign country. It’s not 2014 anymore mate :(

Depends. Where might you be hypothetically going?

Possibly not a good idea to recommend breaking the law. Customs violations can be quite severe, also.

I have

Bought watches abroad several times in the past in both EU countries and non EU also.
Not that the EU has any bearing for me nowadays.

I always have declared my watches when I entered the U.K.
Only twice have I been asked to pay Duty and VAT and luckily on both those occasions the amounts payable were not too painful and the total cost was still less than I could get the watch in the U.K.

If, by some miracle, you get the opportunity to buy the watch you want abroad don’t hesitate. It may be a very long time before you get the opportunity again.

As in all aspects of life, be honest in your actions, and you will not have an issue.
This forum is not here to discuss ways to circumvent the 'system', hypothetical or otherwise..
Best practice is to abide by the said laws in your country.
