If you want the very best refinished dial - then you'll need to seek out 'Ivan The Dark Lord'.
The problem is, he's expensive - and a bit of a 'Banksy'* character and difficult to contact. Do a google search for "Rolex Ivan The Dark Lord". Or try over on https://rwg.cc/ (I hope it's OK to post this link - if not, Mods, please remove with my apologies.) Good luck, whatever you decide. *Banksy is an 'anonymous' British street artist for those who may not know. |

Step fathers 5513
How about this:
I don’t know who else can refinish the dial, but I think he can handle it. |

I can see why you would say that. In my instance however, I am not selling this and it would be nice to have the dial in a functional state. So in my case, this sort of restoration is not as great a sin as it also a way to get it back to a state in which my father in law last used it. (Although I think he tried to tinker with this watch and left it half done - oh well)

First I'd find the hands, then I'd write James Hyman and ask to repare the dial, the closest than its original state and in order that the handset fits to the colour of the lume!

So a small update. I have side lined the plan to get the dial restored. I will park it for something I can do another time. My watch maker has located a dial which he says is correct for this watch. He mentioned something about the 1520 caliber movement (sorry not sure lost me a bit there). What do you guys think? It has a mark on it, but it looks ok. Is it real though? Does it match this watch?
I would have preferred to use my step dads dial but this will do for now. Oh yeah so also, my watch maker is asking $1750USD for it, so around $2500 Aussie bucks. |

I wouldn’t. You already have a dial in need of restoration, why invest a lot of money in a second dial in mediocre condition (bad scratch, spotty lume). I would stick with the relume idea. James Hyman is the person, as mentioned above.

I agree with Dan. Also, with renovating the dial you have the original in your watch. Last but not least, postponement of (part of) a project is never a good thing; cast the iron while its hot! |

Agree with Dan. If the watch is a 1,2XX,XXX serial number, a matte dial isn't even correct for it anyway. And that scratch is pretty rough. It will always jump out every time you look at it. Getting the original dial straightened out seems like a great course of action

ok cool, thanks guys, I just wanted to sound this one off with the experts here and it only took a few minutes! I will let my watch maker know I want to stick to the original plan.

Stick to the original dial. Its also cheaper I think. Just find the right people to professionally restore it.

OK, a bit of activity now, dial is on its way back next week so I can ship it to HK. I will take some close ups front and back before I post and some when it returns.

Believe me, I wish this process was faster. With covid 19 and slow shipping etc, its taking ages. I still have to post the dial to HK and then wait 8-12 weeks for the restoration. Then return shipping. This wont be done until the end of the year I'd say.
Still, it will be worth the wait. |

This thread is super juicy. Stoked to hear how the restoration of the dial goes. I appreciate the thought and consideration of OP with this whole thing. All of the helpful commenters are rad, too!

Cheers! Update - the dial restoration will take only 4-6 weeks depending on the complexity. Also, I asked again, that no exisiting paint is to be removed and I have been assured for the fourth time (lol) this will not happen. So I am super excited to see how well this turns out.

Interesting thread I’m looking forward to the finished article plus it’s great to see how bad these watches get and can be salvaged and made good again
