Scratches on Bezel Numbers - CHNR

I was admiring my new GMT II CHNR with a loop this week and saw what looked like black tar inside the "18" number on the bezel. I assumed it was left over from the ceramic process. I used a needle to remove it and it looks like I scratched the inside of the "8" on the bezel. It is not visible with the naked eye so I am not overly concerned. I am amazed at how easily this surface scratched. Anybody else experienced something similar. I can be a bit anal about these kind of things - especially with a brand new watch - but I know I can always get a new bezel. How much for a new replacement bezel?

Roughly $600 usd for a new Bezel insert according to what I’ve read on these forums.

Sounds like you made a series of bad decisions starting with that loupe. Quit while you're ahead, and enjoy the watch with your naked eye.

One of the numbers is scratched in my Bluesy bezel. Have no idea how it happened. It’s a thin and shiny scratch. It bothered me for a while, I couldn’t unsee it. After a couple weeks, though, I no longer even notice it anymore.

Loupes and expensive watches are not a great combination, can only end in potential disappointment.

If a soft bristle tooth brush, mild soap, and warm water don’t do the trick I let it be.

I was complaining to a friend about a subtle noise my car was making. He said “let me fix it”....and turned the radio on.

Throw the loupe away in the garbage can. That was your first and biggest mistake. As for a new insert, definitely hundreds to replace.

I bought my wife some nice eye clean diamond earrings. I do not look at them under magnification. Better for everyone that way.

There are days like these when our judgment is a bit iffy. That’s why I don’t want to try to remove the stubborn water marks on the crystal of my c500 and that weird stain on the lug of my AP.

It’s like fixating on a paint blemish of your car and the next thing you know, you see primer.

Just for fun, I looked at a Rolex dial and a Grand Seiko with an electron microscope at 1500X. Both looked horrible. Just use your natural vision and enjoy your watch.

Just think of it as a way to ID your watch if it ever needs to be identified (like after service or whatnot) since this tiny otherwise invisible defect in such a small crevice would likely not be repaired

I’m just saying because everyone says to never look at your Rolex with a loupe...

And when I went to a Seiko AD, the sales guy was super excited for me to check out the watch with a loupe, which I did

I'm pretty sure it's safe for some people to use a loupe. Heck Omega throws one in with the Moonwatch. These people that go nuts when they find something they can't even see are rare.

PVD can be marred by sharp objects.

But you’ll get a chance to replace it during its next service.

When you picked up that needle and started scratching, did it feel like the right thing to do?

For sure I’ve had to ask myself similar questions in the past!

If you can't see it with the naked eye why would you bother replacing the bezel? Look at any object under magnification and you'll find some kind of flaw, I just don't get why some people do it. Wear the watch for a few weeks and you'll find all sorts of scratches with a loupe.
