Personally, I've never had any intention of getting hitched and as such, can be a little cavalier about the institution. My parents 53 year marriage notwithstanding, far too many stories like yours soured me decades ago. Too many friends living in rooming houses after unsuccessful marriages after losing beautiful homes, cars, Art Collections, etc. Marriage is great for some and clearly, my opinion is my own but the financial ramifications and, usually the bad blood between the ex partners is not for me. When young children are affected negatively, it's even more tragic.

I sincerely hope you don't dwell excessively on the situation and look forward to the next chapter. The Daytona is a great start even though it's only a materialistic 'vain bijou'. (sp)
Sometimes even a small gift to oneself can put a smile on your face when looking into an uncertain future.

Thanks for the very thoughtful reply. I couldn’t agree more. While I definitely took a massive financial hit (gave up a great house to keep the kids in it) and my collection unfortunately faced some casualties, I realize it’s short term and the opportunity cost of being in the wrong relationship is far bigger. Focused on the future and you are also right about how sometimes a trivial thing like a new watch can help jolt you back into a better mindset.

I got divorced also. Her choice, I’m really glad now as she wasn’t a horrible person, but being a woman she was getting uglier every year.
