Icon19 Most liquid watch brands (and models)?

So I have around $100k just sitting in my bank account. I don't really need it for anything at the moment. I don't like buying stocks etc since it's too much work involved. So I thought of my Rolex GMT Master II that I purchased a few years ago, and how it has actually increased in value. And I thought: Why not buy another luxury watch?

So this time I'm looking to possibly spend a bit more. Maybe up to $30-40k. But I want to buy something that is not going to lose value. And something that would be easy to sell in case I ever needed cash.

Could you offer some suggestions? How would you rank a top 10? Or perhaps there aren't even 10 brands/models worth looking into?

I think you should discuss this with a financial advisor or planner.

There’s dozens of possibilities I’d consider before thinking about turning a checking account account/not-so-high yield savings account into a “liquid watch vault.”

Fair suggestion. Thanks. But for the sake of the discussion, lets talk about watches!

For buying new the short answer is that the pieces you can readily buy will drop a ton as soon as you walk out of the AD whereas any piece trading above list price will be hard to get. In terms of brand Rolex has got to be most liquid.

Another canny investor. You should consider investing in Tulips. They’ve been undervalued for years.

Good suggestions. How about a used AP with a leather strap? Can pick them up for like 30-50% retail. So shouldn't lose too much, right? On the other hand, wonder how easy they are to sell...

Don't get me wrong I'm not doing this as an investment. I want a watch and I will buy it to wear it. I am just not in the financial situation where I can spend $40k and then don't worry about losing $20k to depreciation. If I can not lose more than 10% buying and selling used, then that would be all right.

Unless we are talking about ultra-rare watches of historic significance, a watch should not be an investment. At the prices you are talking about, the pieces would hardly be rare, and human behaviour (and behavioural economics) dictates the market could change with scant warning. What is “liquid” and sought-after today may not be liquid and sought-after tomorrow.

So I will echo what others have said before: buy a watch with money you can happily afford to lose and then talk to someone more financially sophisticated for the best way to deploy the remainder of your cash.

I think you will need to be a little more involved, active, in this pursuit to make it work. At which point you’d be back to square one (I.e. not wanting to do any work).

To me, no question you could deploy 100k smartly and make money. So I don’t think your question is silly or misplaced. But thinking it’ll be easy and without work is being naive (or said another way, it’s taking risk you don’t want).

IMO you missed the boat on the the hot models: Nautilus, Aquanaut, certain Rolex sports models, FPJ Chrono Bleu, AP Royal Oak. Hard to say if there's a value proposition in the $30-40K range - seems like its crowded with complicated dress watches with limited customer base in the stay at home economy.

That's easier said than done. If you could have your pick at msrp that would very do-able Unfortunately that not being the case there's risk involved buying grey market. Who knows what the future watch market will be as far as investing goes. Good luck and Happy hunting...O ya, just buy what YOU love..

Normally i'd agree, yet we haven't had a crisis of currency's perceived value (just yet). No worries as central banks are trapped into increasing their electronic funds to keep this bubble inflated.... right up until......

I would educate myself on which models are hot and are also easy to wear and have some bang for the buck. Rolex is King when it comes to being able to move them but PP is also solid for certain models. Not an AP fan so I can not speak to the brand. Instead of going in at one watch for 40-50K, I would spread that money across several hot Rolex SS models. I would look on our Trusted Sellers websites and see what the watches can be had for and decide what I am interested in purchasing. I would call and discuss it with them and then bundle up 2-5 watch for the best deal that can be had. Should you need the funds back you can sell all or part of the collection depending on the need. It will also give you some nice options to wear day to day. I would also insure the watches, something you can not do with stocks, and just sit back and enjoy. I would be interested in a last generation Submariner-C ND, BLRO, BLRN, Explorer II. Good luck and let us know what you decide.

OP has some spare cash and wants to spend on something that gives him / her the pleasure of ownership whilst not losing the shirt / dress if it needs to go. I get that. So for your sake, I'll suggest this. Buy pre-owned. There are so many to choose from that offers good value because the depreciation has already been worn by the first owner.

Top of my picks at your price point would be any AP ROO 44mm or VC OS.

Almost any Rolex SS professional at MRSP

EDIT: it’ll be more work sourcing than picking stocks

Yup. Everyone had this idea 3/4 years ago so there are no investment/enjoyment deals to be had now, unless you want to use your cash to wine and dine some ADs, but then its probably easier and more self-respectful to buy risky stocks.

I'm sitting on significantly more liquidity than that, and I'm thinking a $2,500 Nomos Orion is too much money right now...
