Congrats on this 5513, its really great and I fully support you only polishing the crystal. I do not support this rubberb.

1.4 is very early for a matte dial. I have seen maybe 2 others with a 1.4 serial. Many with 1.5 and most with 1.6, 1.7m.

I always wondered if a 1.4m serial was too early for a matte dial as other references like 1675 and 5512's had gilt dials in 1.4m serials.

Either this dial was swapped very early on in its life, or its one of the first matte MF dials ever issued. Based on the insert alone, I would say this is legit and 1.4m cases CAN be correct with matte dials. The 1.66 case back is also right at the cusp as all 1965's were Gilt..

I think this is a rare bird indeed..

HOLY S&$/!

What a find. That insert is crazy.

My guess is he paid under $1,000. Amazing that someone is computer savvy enough to list in CL but can’t figure out how to google search prior to listing.

Beautiful watch, very clean dial, nice score! I picked up my 1675 off Craigslist, about 12 years ago, here in Chicago.

Did the seller actually list Rolex Submariner in their CL ad or was it more obscure like ‘watches’ and part of a larger array of goods they were selling. I agree with southtexas’ post. How can someone know enough about the internet to list an ad on CL but not google ‘old Rolex submariner’ ????

1,42x,xxx is perhaps a bit early for a matt dial, this generally would be considered gilt territory. I’m sure others will be quick to correct me if I’m wrong

It’s likely a replacement dial but it’s still a beauty, and I’m sure it was a great deal.

Back from service! Here’s some pics of the after. Replaced crown and tube. Lightly polished the crystal. There a few dings still in the crystal and I appreciate the watchmakers choice to not try to dig them out.

Thanks. I couldn’t be happier with it.

The service was done at a small local watchmaker. It’s normally a two month wait but I paid a couple hundred extra to expedite. He promised 1 week but knew I was really looking forward to it so he finished up after only 4 days.

Very interesting, as what I've read for years is that matte dials started about 1.6 million. However, this watch looks so perfectly matching all around and based on the condition, it would seem odd if the dial had ever been replaced. It also would make little sense logically, because if it originally had a late gilt dial, why would it have needed a replacement dial just a couple of years later? Of course, hobbyists/collectors can swap dials, but it would be very surprising that a Craigslist watch would have had that kind of life.

Either way, beautiful example.

In the pictures, the lume looks flat. The very early matte dials had puffy lume similar to what was used on the gilt dials. Also, I believe the OP said that the lume does not glow at all when exposed to light.

The lume is definitely puffy just very hard to see in pictures but correct it doesn’t glow anymore. Oddly the pearl does have some glow when exposed to UV light but fades very quickly once source is removed.

My watchmaker believes it’s all original but I guess Rolex is the only one who knows for sure. Has anyone ever have any luck getting those details from them? Or are they even kept?

That lume pic almost looks like a different dial. There appears to be a big chunk of lume missing from the 3 o clock marker.

Regardless, great watch!
