However, I can not ignore the fact that these are basically the same watch and wonder if it would be foolish to own both in a collection?

It's your collection.

A collection has direction, it isn't always just a bag of different watches with no rhyme or reason.

Having 2 different subs, or even a dozen, which you could have - all of them different in their own way - is more of a true "collection" than having a few that have no obvious connection.

I too am facing the same problem, I have a 114060 and a 116610LVc. I find that I grab the LV in almost every instance when deciding between the two. Partially because I wear a Speedmaster to work every day so when I switch it up I want to see something other than the black that I'm used to. I also see black subs all over the place which further deters me from wearing it.

I agree that the LV would be An amazing pairing.

Personally I think the pieces you own are distinct enough. For me the issue would be with two monochromatic divers

I think that’s a pair you don’t want to break up. They are different enough

I have a 14060M and a 124060. Both no dates, of course. So, having a Sub and a no date doesn’t seem redundant.

I personally love the sub in any configuration.
My ideal two sub set up would be one LN and a PM.

I may pop on a YG OF Daytona first. But will ultimately pick up a PM sub as well.

You can’t go wrong!

I don't feel foolish at all.

You say you can't ignore it, so maybe you've already answered your own question. I wouldn't be too hasty myself. Maybe give it some time. The right watch has a tendency to make itself known. They could both turn out to be the right watch.
These are two very different looking watches and absolutely could and should live in the same collection if the owner so wishes.

Two black subs of the same era? Now that is overkill in my opinion, I supplemented my 124060 with a 126710 BLNR on Jubilee to add a bit of variety

Personally I feel having both the 124060 and 126610 is redundant.

As some others have pointed out, I would keep the 124060 and trade the Sub Date for a GMT Master II or the LV for color.

But that's just me, how you feel about it is more important.

Here're mine, cheers!

I own the exact same pair. Very good combination as far as I am concerned. Adding a no date would make it the perfect Submariner trifecta.

I personally won't get both. Doesn't excite me. I'll sell one and get another Rolex. If you can obtain a 5 digit Sub, then they are different enough to own both.

Either of these combinations might work to keep a date function in your collection!
