5131/1p or 5740/1g

Hello everyone,

I am considering to buy a Patek Philippe watch either a World Time 5131/1p or a Nautilus 5740/1g (pictures of both attached are not mine). So I would like to ask your thoughts on which one I should get (of course I will try both on at some point before I make the final decision).

The MSRP for the 5131/1p is around 10% higher than the 5740/1g, however, from what I've seen of the prices on the grey market (which is how I will be buying), I think the 5740/1g is around 5% higher than the 5131/1p.

Which of these two watches is nicer aesthetically? Has anyone tried both on or seen either one in real?

In the long term, which of these two watches would have better value (I know no one knows for sure so I understand it would be more guessing). The 5131/1p might be discontinued soon?

While I make this decision, I would very much appreciate any thoughts and opinions from anyone on this forum, thank you very much.

5131/1p or 5740/1g

Which do you like? In my opinion, they are apples and oranges. I have the 5131p on order, but if told to trade between that or my 5740, I would likely tell them to keep the 5131p. In my opinion, I think Patek nailed it on the 5740. It is a quintessential Patek with the complicated movement, while a nautilus with visually balanced stunning blue dial. That said, make no mistake, the enamel dial on the 5131p is pure art. As to answering your value retention question...I will let the others play in that sandbox. I will only say that I wonder wether the premium for the band on the 5131p is worth it when you can get a 5131g for much less. I guess what I am saying is that the band of the 5131p is nice, but not adding value per se in the visual sense and this tends to translate into dollars and cents with long term demand presuming others feel the same.

If my AD is kind enough to bestow me with either of these watches, I will take the 5740 and run as fast as I can.

5740 simply because I have no need of the WT functionality and thus find it busy on the dial, while the PC is practical. However the enamel dial is an art really.

I would go with the 5740 between the two. Its a more useful complication for me and its easier to tell the time. Dont get me wrong the 5131 is a beauty in all variants I just find it hard to read the time. Goodluck!

5740。The reason is it is the only perpetual calendar nautilus watch. It is ultra thin too.

5131.
Pure Patek and made in probably half the quantity of the mere Nautilus

5740 for sure.

Can’t do the world time bracelet. Too old fashioned and not in a good way - to my eye anyway!

And if I was looking at a 5740 I’d look at an AP Royal Oak perpetual calendar ultra thin too

I love both my 5131R and also my 5740G, but given the option of the 5131P or the 5740G I would take the 5740G. Now if the 5131P was on a strap and hence £20k-£30k cheaper then that would be getting my vote and I would be adding a 5711/12/26A for the difference.

I own several Patek PCs. If you wear it regularly, you don't have to reset it. However if you don't wear it regularly, you have to reset it periodically (which isn't super hard, but takes some time) or put it in a watch winder. Most Patek automatic PCs come with a watch winder, so I would check if the 5740 comes with a watch winder if you are purchasing pre-owned.

Both the 5740 and 5141/1P are great choices. I always say platinum Pateks are extra special. But I would recommend tohat you try to see the watches in person before making a purchase decision, especially on pre-owned.

Love my 5740g for all the reasons mentioned previously here (complication, thinness, micro rotor, heft, perfectly balanced bracelet with presence etc)...and have had the pleasure of holding my friend's 5131p (he's around somewhere)...it is an entirely different beast all together....the platinum heft and the way they did that bracelet is exquisite....then there's the enamel dial. I never had any feelings about the 5131/5231 watches since they never aesthetically sang to me....but in the metal it is amazing and the enamel just pops as actual art. Tough pick indeed.....I've considered owning both since they're both so good hah.

Congrats to you for your 5740! Guess I must have missed your post. Do post pics! You have a very cool collection now.

Depends if your priority is wearability, art or short or long term investment

Wearability or short term investment - 5740.

Thing of beauty or Long term investment - 5131

I’d take the 5131 (Maybe putting on a strap) every day of the week as I think is timeless. I very much like and own a 5711 but it desireability will Fluctuate over time

5740/1g is a great watch. No doubt. I recently got to try on my good friend’s, who’s around these parts. He knows who he is.

But to me, the 5131/1p is the winner because of my affection for platinum, the WT, and the enamel dial. The total package in my eyes.

I’d rather get the 5131/1p and a SS 5712. Best of everything.

Tough one. My eyes always lock onto the weird (in my eyes) cities font on the 5131s such that I have trouble appreciating the enamel. That being said my interest in the 5740 has cooled a little recently but I would still pick that one now and add a 5110P (or a possible future 5231P) at some point for the WT.

I think your logic works for me. I would say of the two watches being discussed, for the very reasons stated already, the 5131 is the clear winner.

Wow, thank you everyone so much for all the replies they’re very helpful. I will try both 5131/1p and 5740/1g on soon before I decide. Hopefully I don’t get more confused after that!

Regarding @nyc2la post above, I actually own a 5712/1a already as my only Patek Philippe watch currently. I didn’t want that to affect my decision initially because the 5740/1g is a very different Nautilus to 5712/1a. However, if I end up liking the 5131/1p a lot and really stuck on which one to get, it may just come down to that exact reason that I can end up having both World Time with the 5131/1p as well as Nautilus 5712/1a that I already own.

I own a couple Nautilus watches.... So I think adding the 5131p vs another Nautilus makes a lot of sense.

As awesome as the 5740g is... From an aesthetics point of view I think the 5712a is pretty similar..... Same color metal, also three subdialish setup albeit asymmetrical.... IMO it's the most interesting/best stainless Nautilus side by side with the 5726a (I flop my thoughts here pending on mood and what I reach for).

Enjoy the journey and best of luck with the decision.... No losing proposition here.... Not a bad place to be.

Thank you for your reply.

Personally I don't like to wear watches with leather bracelets thats why the 5131 j/g/r were never in consideration for me.

Considering production numbers, the understanding is that most ADs will receive one 5740 a year, whereas many will receive a 5131/1P or a 5231J one every few years, assuming they have a qualified "applicant".

Rarity of a piece is not the most important quality of a watch. However the 5131/1P is probably the rarer watch, considering there are only a few artisans that can paint the enamel dial on these watches.

5740 looks better on bracelet, but 5131 on strap is a stunner. Long term value no idea, buy what you like the most.
