Mugging with Oyster Perpetual

On my 5:00am walk down to the Anacostia river in SE Washington DC this morning I noticed a car was parked along the side of the road on which I was walking. It had its lights on and was a block away. There is nothing in this area of town at that time of the morning, so I thought it was odd. I proceeded to cross the road to walk next to the Nationals Stadium. When I did this, the car starting driving in my direction very slowly. That should have put me on keen alert, but it didn't.

About 60 seconds later the car appears, coming up behind me. I turn around and there are three teenage males running towards me. They were only 15 feet away. I started to run, but they were too close. The small 15 year old looking male punches me in the side of the head while the other two slightly larger males tackle me. At that point I made no attempt to resist. Better to give up my stuff than to risk injury.

The two larger males then wrestled to get my wallet out of my pocket and pull my iPhone 11 (new) off of my belt. After they struggled for a minute, they got the wallet, and I thought the phone also, and ran to the waiting car.

After they left, I realized wow ... they didn't get my phone. Unbelievable since it was a $1,300 item. It didn't occur to them to simply open the belt case and simply remove the phone! Excellent!

At the time, I was wearing a 34mm Oyster Perpetual with black dial. Beautify watch. Who knows why, but no attempt was made to get the watch. Another Excellent!

So all in all, no injuries at all. Lost maybe $20 and my credit cards. All cards were immediately canceled and there were no charges made on them.

The kids missed out on a $5,000 watch and a $1,300 phone. Too bad. Dumb robbers.

I’m always hesitant when leaving Nationals games at night. Sorry you had to deal with that. Glad the loss was minimal. Stay safe

Glad you’re safe and in one piece. Karma will chuff their bits in the bad way, don’t you worry. She rides a slow horse, but always arrives.

Sorry that happened, glad you’re ok, obviously not good but could have been a lot worse physically and materialistically, it’s a shame people stoop to this, these days when walking or just sitting waiting in my car (I am a Chauffeur) I tend to observe people around me, especially late at night don’t think I do the same early morning that doesn’t tend to feel as intimidating.

I attended a large, urban university and get frequent alerts via SMS and email for crime that happens near campus. The most frequent item stolen from muggers -- who are often the same age as your muggers -- is probably an iPhone. This is why I don't have an iPhone anymore but instead a cheap Motorola phone. It's also why I held out on purchasing a Rolex for so long -- until yesterday, when I got my Datejust.

You're very lucky they didn't get your OP. They probably wouldn't have realized what it was even if they were standing next to you in broad daylight.

If anyone wants to read my suggestion for foiling watch thieves, look for my thread here later today.

So sorry to hear that. I live in the city myself but lately have been very cautious about wearing my watches in public. Glad you're safe!

Glad you're safe. Here's to hoping for a day when no one's in position to get robbed (or feels the need to rob others).

Sorry to hear and glad you're ok. If they were smart, they wouldn't be mugging people.

Scum! Hate stuff like this. Shame that we can't enjoy the things we worked hard for in peace.
At least you had the last laugh, $20 when they could of made a couple of thou!

Not haunted at all. In fact, I'll be out for another beautiful morning tomorrow. I won't be paranoid, but I will pay attention to what's around me. I'll be as I was today. At peace with myself and enjoying life. I feel quite calm today, as I was in the morning.

No one has the ability to rob me of my happiness, and peace of mind. I won't give that to anyone ... and it can't be taken.

I don't mean to demean what happened. It was a serious assault. But in the overall scheme of life, it isn't important and definitely not worth dwelling on and so I won't.

Thanks to all for the kind words.

sorry to hear that.. but glad it ended the way it did without any major injuries and not having your watch taken.. they probably don’t have much experience mugging yet.. haha.. thought that watches are the first thing people go after?

with find my iphone and whatever the android version of that is, phones are probably not getting stolen as much anymore? (please correct me if i’m wrong, not sure on the statistics!)

I live in NW DC, thief’s are now in cars and I hear young people male/female.
I don’t go out at night walking around and yes iPhones call attention.
Hope you all use a passcode.

I think one has to be very careful in any Big City.
But here is good to hide your stuff while walking ... but if you have good sneakers they can get you for that alone.

If I go out to eat, I wait for uber inside the bar, shop, etc.

Glad you didn’t loose much just the scare and kept the Rolex and Phone.

Stay safe in all aspects!

Glad you wasn’t hurt. Most people know you can easily be track with an iPhone. Also, any Apple products will become a brick and can’t be activated once it’s reported stolen.
