SOLD: Serviced Vintage SEIKO Lord Marvel 5740-8000 (1977)

The Seiko Lord Marvel 5740-8000 - sold only in Japan from 1967 to 1978 - was the first Seiko watch (and second in the world after the GP Gyromatic) to contain a 36,000bph movement, and was the forerunner of the Grand Seiko Hi-Beat series.



Condition

This 1977 model has just had a movement service, and is in outstanding condition, with only very light scratches on the case. The lugs are still thick and the original bevels are still sharp.

The sunburst dial looks radiant, the printing is sharp, the applied SEIKO logo and hands are in great shape, and the acrylic crystal has no scratches or chips.

The 23-jewel, manual-wind movement is clean and bright, and is keeping excellent time with around 250 amplitude and 0/0 beat error.

The 5470c movement runs at 36,000 beats per hour, or 10 beats per second, sweeping the seconds hand smoothly around the dial. It’s a wonderful thing to look at, and to listen to (up close). See my Instagram here for a video clip of the sweeping seconds hand.
