Panerai and their Bronze

I'm sure the answer to this question will be "Because they can" but i was wondering if anyone has an idea why Panerai charge such a premium for their Bronze watches?

I've had a real hankering for a 968 Bronzo to add to my Radiomir and Luminor but when looking at them i cant understand why they attract such a premium at retail (I know they're "limited production")

The 968 retails for $17,000
The closest non bronze sub with the same specs is the 1305 that's almost $6,000 cheaper and has a titanium case (no ceramic bezel, though)
For $17,000, you're in Carbotec territory

Likewise, the PAM760 Radiomir (another limited production piece) is more than double the price of the Radiomir 8 days (the 2nd most expensive in the line)

When i look at brands like IWC and Zenith, their bronze pieces usually carry a $500-$1000 premium

Is there something i'm missing here or is it just a case of "they charge it cause people pay it"

If i'm being honest, I'll probably pay it regardless, so maybe it doesn't matter but it still left me wondering

The original Bronzo 382, the one that was claimed to be the only Bronzo to be ever produced, had a much more realistic price but once prices on the secondary market went through the roof, Panerai wanted a piece of the cake and adjusted the prices to reflect the value on the secondary market.

Cheers

A very popular watch where the material and its patina effect goes well with the design of the watch, giving it that steampunk effect that is very fashionabl,e especially among younger collectors. I prefer the older bronzo models where the rotating bezel is bronze as well, the newer ones with the ceramic insert that is not supposed to age does not make a whole lot of sense to me.

Having the exact same issue atm. Always wanted a Submersible and always wanted a bronze watch so perfect marriage but like you I’m finding it very hard to justify the price difference just because of a bronze case. I get the because they can they will but doesn’t sit that right with me. Beautiful piece though, oddly wish it was a 44mm though.

Maybe Panerai thinks the small, niche market of buyers they're trying to service aren't shopping other brands.

Even if that is true (which would be a really silly idea) the fact that their Bronze Sub costs considerably more than titanium and almost as much a Carbon Fiber is crazy

I’ve seen preowned 968’s selling in the 14k range.

It really makes no sense when you compare it to, say, a Tudor BB bronze Bucherer at 4k. But the 1074 is a damn good looking piece, though.

This is exactly what happened. Great looking pieces but not cheap. Panerai are clearly making a massive margin on the new ones they sell. Only you can decide if its worth the money.

This 1074 looks amazing. My reluctance for bronze pieces is the oxidation of the case. But in this case, it’s actually not bad, and it’s fitting of the style.

They aren't cheap, but man I love it! When I made my first reply to this thread, I wasn't planning on owning one so soon!
