Rolex Zephyr models

As a fan of Rolex's "Zephyr" models, I wanted to put together a coherent timeline/list of variants. Two things define a Zephyr: a crosshair dial, and one of these two bezels types:

There are some Rolexes with only a Zephyr bezel, or only a crosshair dial, and I'll leave it to you to decide if those are true "Zephyrs," as that's a collector term and not an official Rolex term. I'll try to include them all in this list.

Men's Oyster models

1956-1960: Ref. 6582

1960-1967: 1008/1009

1967-1987: 1038
(first "Guill. Ind" bezel rather than "Guill. Fant")

1969-1973: 1512
(only Zephyr with a date)

Ladies' models

1971-1983: 6724
1983-1996: 67243

Non-Oyster models

1962-1966: 9919/9522

Mid-1960's: 3694 pendant watch

Misc. crosshair dials

1950's: 656x models with crosshair dials

1950's: Tudor 79xx models with crosshair dials

Some Tru-Beats have crosshair dials too:

Wow, that's a Zephyr Master Class right there, Rob! Always loved the minimalism of these dials. Thanks for sharing!

And these aren't really Zephyrs but deserve an honorable mention in the "miscellaneous crosshair dial" category. Dustproof references 6422 and 4499:

Ref. 4081 has a "Guill Ind" bezel so I suppose it deserves a mention here too:

Welp, my assertion that Zephyr was just a collector nickname was totally wrong. Rolex has used it in advertising:

Excellent!

So, the 1038 didn’t have alpha hands…is there a reason why some has the regular baton hands and others had the paddle hands? Was it based on the dial color?

Hello Powerfunk,
i have a question. Where did you find the information that the 6582 was only available with white and gold dial? (stated in one of the pictures). I just bought a 6582 with black dial (i hope its real lol, bought with ebay authenticity guarentee).. And ive seen a few pictures online of 6582s with black dial. thank you!

I'd only ever seen silver and gold before when I wrote that, guess I was wrong!

thanks for the quick response!
And i meant silver and gold in the previous post, not white and gold.
I also found an article that said the 6582 came out in silver, gold and black (i cant post the link because i dont have 10 posts yet, i made the account just for this question. But the sites name is dellaroccagioielli )
So i hope mine is fine 😅 its on the way to me right now. Thats how it looks like:

Look forward to seeing better pictures of the black dial. Writing looks sloppy.
Ebay Authenticity would not know the difference in dials.

Just found the listing on the bay, that dial does not look good at all.
You may want to contact Ebay to see if they will comment on it to give you the quickest opportunity to initiate the return, unless you are ok with it.
I even doubt that dial was black to begin with.

Yes, the dial is refinished. Not saying the underlying dial plate wasn’t a genuine Zephyr but no way to know.

Key is how the crosshairs don’t intersect the coronet correctly - offset to the 1 o’clock side.

Hey guys, thanks for your help! I can return the watch, i bought it from a commercial seller, not a privat person, so i can just return it. Do you think its not an real zephyr or just not an original black dial? I think tomorrow there will be the result of the ebay authentication, but as you said, i am also not really sure how good they check

The authentication service said original watch with refinished dial. The seller will make me a new offer. (it was sold for 4k). What would be a good price?

I would recommend to pass on the watch altogether.

Just send it back. That dial is horrible and kills the watch.

Thanks! Do you just don‘t like it visually or also think its not worth anything anymore since its refinshed?

It's worth a fraction of what it would be worth with an original dial, assuming you were ever able to resell it.

Let's update the available Zephyr models to include the 1510. Maybe the OP can find more information.

Good point, Zephyr dials can be found on 1510's! They have a Morellis bezel, not a Zephyr bezel, so I'm not sure I'd fully consider it a Zephyr, but pretty close! Zephyr dials can also be found on other rare gold 150x models like the 1506 with Chine bezel.

I rotate my daily wear, and right now it's a Zepher in mint shape I picked up a while back

Replacement Dial?

Hello,
I have what I believed to be a 1008 Zephyr. From the little research I have done and from the examples I have seen on this thread it looks most likely that the dial has been replaced.
Regards,
Oli
