Why is Platty the ONLY Rolex with a NOBLE metal dial?
Hi guys,
Simple question: Why have Rolex incorporated the use of a noble metal ONLY in the SS/Pt. YM? I mean, it's still a relatively affordable model as compared with some of the other Rollies. Surely, they must be using SOLID GOLD dials in some of their blinged-up models like the Masterpiece? And why would they still use BRASS in their all gold Day-Date models? After paying a bomb for a DD, surely a few grams of solid 18 K gold in a dial wouldn't make too much of a difference to the price? Any expert thoughts on this one, guys? Thanks - JJ

Well, don't expect Rolex to use tantalum, palladium, rhodium or mercury anytime soon. Hey wait, that would be a great tool watch.....a watch that could take your temperature too......

well, IMHO rolex uses platinum on this model for one reason only,, TO SELL IT
i dont think sales on the yacht-master would be as high as they are if the bezel was steel !! but good question on the dial,,, dont really know why its the only model with a platinum dial !! |

I don't know the answer to that question, but I do know my wife's everrose gold dust MOP dial with 10 diamonds is pretty darn nice too!

One thing that strikes me is that Rolex does not advertise the DIAL being made of Platinum!
I mean, Rolex does specify that the "applied dial figures" are made of WG. After all, Platinum is a very, very expensive and exclusive material! So why not state it in the price list as is done with the applied dial figures?? Anyway, MY guess is that the dial for the YM is made in Platinum due to the special way it has been treated. Platinum would never be affected by any post-chemical reactions that the paint and blast treatment of the YM dial received. Note that only the YM has such a dial treatment/finish, and only the YM has a Platinum dial.

It seems to me that Rolex often uses their "distinctive" features in just one model of watch or in one particular line. But why do they not promote it? I have no idea about that one,

This pic is more likely to show the result of what happens when a watch maker with dandruff services your watch and forgets to inspect the dial afterwards.

So is it confirmed that the complete dial of a YM is made entirely from platinum, and not applied over the brass like the other models?

And I've just had confirmation from a reputed Rolex watchmaker on this forum that the dial is indeed 100% Platinum. Replacement cost of this dial....a staggering US$975!!
