Trade in question.

I currently have a 2004 rolex sub. I wear it everyday. I have been itching for a new one. The stainless steel yachtmaster has caught my eye. I went into Tourneau and they gave me a trade in value of 3700 for my current watch towards the purchase of the brand new 08 yachtmaster. the price would come out to me paying 4635. You guys think this is a good deal or should I shop around.

That does not seem a bad price for a non date sub , if it has a date i'd look for a bit more.
Also try and push for 10-15% off the Yachtmaster.

Just like when shopping for a car, keep the 2 transactions seperate. They try to get you to focus on the "difference" instead of what you're getting for yours and what your paying for theirs.

Welcome to TRF!

I would avoid trade-in deals if I were you. Those are rarely good deals, and remember your AD must earn on it.

Better sell your Sub Date privately if it has to go.

Agreed, figure out their best price for the YM. Then see what you can sell your Sub for. If you can't get a better spread, then go back to the original idea of a trade.

Well, you are always going to take a bit of a hit on a trade in for the convenience of it. You may get a little more if you sell it yourself but to me this seems like a decent price for daily wear Sub that will be due a service next year.

I don't think thats a great trade and I don't think the YM is as cool as the venerable Submariner. Keep your Sub.

Keep the Sub, you'll miss it one day and then probably go out and buy another. I started with "just a Sub" and now has several Rolex's...

Two things that will come out of this...

1. Buyer's remorse
2. Seller's remorse

I would keep the sub and don't go for the trade in! Look around for better deals.

Buy the YM! Especially if you sail - unlike a vintage memo sail or lemania you can set the mins of countdown.

Rolex has been more active in the sailing community and this is the culmination of I am sure many years of testing and R&D.

Subby is a divers watch perhaps the best - this YM has the professional fuctionality that will instantly put it at the top of its class.

Of course a $30 ironman may also win you the favored end of the start line the same way a Kia will get you from A to B.

They will not sell a zillion of these watches but the lucky owners will be very happy with their specialized rolly

DO IT

Best bet is to sell the Sub on TRF for 3700. It should go in a heartbeat. Then with cash in hand try to get 15-20% off the YM. Even better, go to a different state and have them ship it to you and save the tax.

Agree--keep the transactions separate. That's a good no-hassle price for your sub, but you should be able to get $1k off of the YM new at an AD. With the trade-in, they're not likely to give you the discount. (Or they'll apply the same discount to your trade.)

Alcan - I PM'd you...

I hope your on J105 to leeward

the only other count down chrono I have seen is a Brietling cosmograph - supposed to be a space application I guess. I am sure there more but this new Rolly is a special beast for a specific application.

Hey, even if you don't sail buy the YM to get your pasta perfectly el dente or at least have the best new years eve watch

Do all AD offer to buy older rolexs. I am not familiar with this. Is it common and how do they figure the prices (KBB or something)?

Remember you are going to get WHOLESALE price for a used watch. Like a car if you can do a private sale you will get 50 to 100% more money and both buyer and seller will be happy.
The only thing you lose is the sales tax write-off on the trade in.
