No regrets on wearing this “original dial” snowflake. In hindsight perhaps the GMT on rubber might have been a good option or the 5164a. The 5164a is perfection except if I lost it or banged it against something my heart would hurt :)

Tokyo can be cramp and despite my best efforts and I already smacked my snowflake against a wall once and against those god forsaken metal railings twice. So far no damage that I can see but my aqua would have suffered.

As for comments on wealth- I would say that I would not consider myself rich. I proudly drive my 2009 Nissan Altima and watch collecting for me is my main vice but being able to focus on classic pieces that retain value is really fun (i’m in Finance too). I know I might sound like a woman figuring out which dress to wear - I think that’s the fun and joy of watch collecting. I’ve picked my wife’ I’ve picked my house, and i’ve also picked a career. Watches are my way of being a little fickle and letting my hair down abit (for now before male pattern baldness takes that away too)
How about that crazy morning rush hour? They still got those baton police mashing everyone into every last inch of the carriage?

Japan is very safe but personally I'm not just walking around shopping/eating/sight seeing. I'm out and about being active and enjoying everything the country has to offer... So I wouldn't take a Patek with me. In terms of safety, not a single thing to worry about as others have said unless you're asking for it like the Kabuki-cho example.

Why wear anything and just not buy a watch in Japan?

I thought the same. With fam in Lithuania and then Portugal. Took 5168 g which goes completely unnoticed probably because of the rubber strap. Nothing at all which I am surprised. Took the 126710BLRO but that got too many eyes. That jubilee really makes it glitter. I am really cautious of surroundings and don’t wear watches through the airports.

Sounds like you made the right choice bringing the GS back to the motherland. Enjoy your trip!

What's the point in having watches if you're afraid....literally afraid....to wear them? You're going to a safe country that might have some rain. Any watch you have would be appropriate. If you're going to be active, then any of your sports watches are appropriate. Your Nautilus is the watch to wear. If you're afraid of crime, then the LAST watch you should ever wear is a Rolex because that's all criminals in most countries recognize. As for the guilt of wearing a 50k watch and choosing to wear a Seiko, that is just ridiculous! Unless you're going to the Congo, Venezuela, or Somalia, then wear the damn Nautilus! What watch you wear on your Japan trip is no different than a watch you would wear on California trip. I also don't get the fear of leaving a watch in a hotel or losing it.... That's what insurance is for and your policy should cover those sorts of things. If I had a Nautilus, I would beat the crap out of it.

A fascinating conundrum indeed. I'm all about situational awareness when traveling. I've spent a large portion of my career working in some rough countries. But I never worried about my watch. What is the point in having them if you aren't confident enough to wear them... especially in a place as safe as Japan?

Now, the real problem is that we are talking about what watch to wear when you go to Japan instead of what JDM Grand Seiko to buy when you get there.

Been 2 days and i’ve seen at least 10 rolexes on wrists. A bunch of submariners (one bluesy) the others black, some date justs. Seen an older aquanaut on a Japanese lady. That’s all so far

Very nice collection. There are at least half a dozen pieces in there that I would wear without any worries. Have a good trip!

Enjoy your vacation!

It seems like you went with the Gran Seiko.
If I was in your shoes, bringing the Seiko to Japan would have been poetic and the clear choice.

Planning on traveling there myself within a few years. I've got a date with a certain 2000GT in the Toyota museum.
