These articles always make me cringe. If my coworkers are concerned about what watch I wear, it says more about them and their insecurities.

i just had an interview the other day and wore my Batman GMT. I didnt notice the watches of the interviewers.

100% agree

There are plenty of people out there who judge you because of what watch you wear and I’d say, of those who I know personally that do this, they are very insecure and have plenty of issues

That being said. The majority of people don’t see value in a frivolous item such as a luxury watch so if someone drops 5, 25 or 50k on a watch they feel their judgement is vindicated. On the other hand, these same people drop 150k on a car and think it’s perfectly justifiable

As said before on the forum, they shouldn’t judge us as stupid for spending money on a watch, if they don’t expect us to judge them for having payments on a car that depreciates quickly

I leave the watch at home for any business related meetings or going to work. They only come out during the weekend or after work-hours.

I believe that a SS watch will generally go unnoticed unless someone is looking for trouble. Even WG/PT go unnoticed generally. But an all YG/RG watch/bracelet does attract attention, and people being people, someone will get jealous. It's up to you to determine if your situation can tolerate this. In my case, no YG when I'm fundraising for a startup because investors often view the purchase as luxurious and therefore question how I'll spend their money. Otherwise I don't worry.

It sounds like they interviewed a couple people who were hoping for attention about their watches, and not getting it at work.

But I will say it was written better than I was expecting, I like how the author was talking about a green faced Rolex and not throwing around nicknames. Seems like watch articles in mainstream papers try to get too technical and end up showing how little they know.

If I am discriminated against because of my watch or attire I don’t want to know or do business with those people, so it’s a very quick way of filtering people you don’t connect with.

I'm with you on that, but unfortunately I've found that Rolex SAs are the absolute worst when it comes to discriminating based on attire or watches

I have to admit I was a bit concerned my new boss would notice I have not one but three Rolex watches as I rotate them each week. In the end, I didn’t avoid wearing them because of that and to my surprise, one day he told me that he really wants to buy a Rolex and in particular he wants my CHNR (his own, not mine!)! That makes two bosses I’ve converted into Rolex lovers!

Thanks Brian that helped.

I surmise that we have a division of opinion in both the closed thread and this new one we’re reading now,

On one side we have people who feel like “I’ll wear what I want” - and I respect that opinion. It sort of sounds like “you’re not the boss of me...”

For those people, look around and ask if you already have everything in life you need, want, and will ever want until you take the eternal celestial dirt nap. If so, congrats and more power to ya. If not, and if you aren’t CEO of your own life yet, maybe shift that opinion a tad. Perhaps away from the typical garden variety of always doing it “my way” and see if you gain more traction to get all the things in life you want.

For those on the other side, the ones who already know that context matters...and in business it matters a lot...then you have already learned to dress appropriately for the occasion. Both in your daily garb and your wristwear.

A clueful interviewer, potential partner, financier, customer, and many more can see through your banter and peel back a layer of your public persona by skillfully observing you, your mannerisms, your accoutrements and your surroundings.

My coworkers like my watches and some take a picture to show their boyfriends. My boss wears no watch but loves mine and asks if I have anything new coming to the office so he can see. I get my deliveries there because someone is always here to sign for it. I enjoy sitting down during lunch and explaining the watches to people who are interested in listening whether it is a vintage Seiko like I love collecting or a Rolex that comes once in a blue moon. Nobody passes judgement at least to my face and I don't flaunt, only entertain questions and try to educate. One of my vendors who comes in used to sell watches at Torneau and another bought a stretch rivet oyster from me for his vintage Rolex that he collects. So I'm fortunate to have a very positive experience with my watches in the workplace with coworkers and associates.

Think the headline of the article should be “People Wear Watches” and the contents of the article should be “People wear watches and if you’d like to also here are some ideas [product placement as in existing article]”

And yes I read it (link to full article worked on Tapatalk, just X’ed out of the paywall box)
