Alternative to going GREY with Daytona

So I read people here suggesting to go to a "superior"watch before paying the crazy grey markets prices for a Daytona.

I saw this beauty that seemed just perfect:

What are your thoughts?

AP design seems to be either love it or hate it for a lot of people, but the daytona seems to be love it for most (although i believe a lot of it is due to hype)

also the AP isn't as good for daily use, but i do agree if paying those kinds of prices i'm going for rolex PM or an AP instead

Great watch and value. Only gripe is the mis centered date between the two batons

Killer watch, and the 38mm will wear larger than a 40mm daytona, due to the integrated lugs.

Like others, I'm not fond of the date aperture, but it doesn't ruin the watch for me. I love my AP, and the royal oak does get a lot of attention as it catches the light in just about every angle.

Not a piece to wear when you're trying to be subtle. Suppose you can throw your EX1 on for those days...

Been interested in the 38mm AP Chrono since it was announced.
It certainly does make sense compared to a Daytona @ current grey premiums.

My AP dealer has given me a time frame of around October, So I hope to score one then.

I have a feeling the AP26315 may end up being a long waitlist piece.

The RO always wears bigger due to the integrated lugs, but they do make a chrono in a 41mm if you have sizable wrists.

Not the same silver/blue color scheme, but a reverse blue/silver (along with a traditional panda and reverse panda).

I'm actually using my AD relationship to help a friend buy the reverse panda 41mm for his dad's birthday right now. He's sorting out the deposit and order this week.

Think that is a very good alternative, size is similar to the D500 it wears slightly bigger, and has a real Panda dial and a fantastic bracelet.

Not too small when compared to a Daytona. In fact it slightly bigger, I’ve tried on a rose gold piece.

Not surprised as the Daytona is not a true 40mm. It’s more like a 38.5mm.

I like the date feature of the AP.

The Chromalight lume of the Daytona is more appealing to me.

Would you have the opportunity to try it at your nearby AP dealer/boutique? I recently “got on the brand”. I am enjoying every bit of my RO (not chrono) and I wear it more often than my Daytona C (don’t get me wrong I still love my Rolex). The workmanship, the dial, case and bracelet are phenomenal. Good luck.

Indeed I do, have to pay them a visit sometime!

Until then can you share what you love about your RO over the Daytona, especially comfort wise?

I have a RO Jumbo. Absolutely love it (even my wife like’s it and insists I never sell it!!).

Having said that there’s a reason my BLNR GMT2 gets 90% of my daily wear. You can bash it about , swim with it...treat it how you wish.

Love them or think they’re hyped, Rolex SS sports watches can’t be beaten for carefree daily wear. Daytona falls right into that category also.

I'd rather pay MSRP for a watch. So if I'm spending around 24k I want a PM Rolex or AP. Or two DaytonaCs.

I have a 15500. These are what I like about it. The tapisserie dial is beautiful and uniquely AP; you can see how AP make these dials on YouTube. The brushed octagonal bezel with 8 WG rivets is just exquisite and a fresh departure from the ceramic bezels. I have a 6.75 wrist and the watch (with 10.8 mm thick case) sits nicely on it. The case back shows the calibre movement with rose gold wheel balance. I like the unique and largely brushed bracelet which is not easily scratched unlike polished center links of some Rolexes including Daytonas. You will feel the weight which is what I like. Here is a photo.

The chrono you are looking into is very nice - white tapisserie dial with what appeared blue-grey sundials. Love to hear about your feedback on it after you try it at the boutique. Good luck.

I would buy an AP at retail any day before spending those crazy grey prices on a Rolex.
I just got a 15500st a month ago and find it much superior to any of the Rolexes I own.

26331 white dial AP is the best alternative to Daytona right now

Are they much more "delicate" compared to Rolex? I love the fact Rolex has a super durable quality, don't want something that can't handle the occasional bang when out and about.

i agree its the best watch of the three (if you are talking current gen). Personal preference vary, but just judging the watch, its awesome. Date window kind of kills it but the reverse panda dial makes it work better than the blue dial

It's a great alternative. Been looking at the same model for some time n would love to see both the white n grey versions in person. Would certainly go for an AP or PM Rolex instead of paying premium over hype.

The VC overseas is a much sturdier watch than the ap, and will take a beating pretty good compared to a royal oak.

I personally find the design of the overseas grating. The overall aesthetic doesn’t work for me at all.

The royal oak isn’t fragile... and will survive bangs on door knobs, railings, your yacht...

But, you’ll see every single ding and scratch and breath you take towards it.

And it will pain you to the depths of your heart.

But, I’ve managed to keep mine fairly blemish free. I wear one of my subs when I am doing anything where I don’t want to worry about what I hit my watch on.

The OP already has an EX1, so he could do that same. AP for style and explorer for beating around.

Alternative to going GREY with Daytona

They are a great alternative as everyone says here.
Honestly my 15202 is by far my favourite watch (prefer than 5712).
But it definitely is much much more delicate than my Rolex. I’m not saying that a RO Chrono isn’t a better buy than a grey Daytona. But for me they’re completely different watches (despite Chrono 3 sub dial giving a sense of similarity).

If you already have a hard wearing daily - I’d go the AP over the Grey Daytona. If you want this watch to be your hard wearing daily I wouldn’t go near a RO.

I actually recently bought the white gold blue face Daytona as opposed to grey SS Daytona. Love it, and it is also hard wearing.
