In the mid-late 2000's Jay-Z took the lead when Nas went rouge with extremist civil rights etc. etc. but hes back to better form as of late, thankfully.

Jay-Z has evolved into an iconic figure who now has much more business and industry knowledge than any current rapper with his talent. The only other person with his business credentials would be puffy but he never had any rapping skill to put it into a song. Jay-Z really excels at evolving his craft along with his interests and family etc. As I said the most consistent ever in the rap world in the form of an artist. Dr Dre also is in the conversation now but I think he always excelled at production even though his rapping is light years better than puffy.

Take a listen here for evolved Jay-Z:

IMHO:
1. Big L
2. BIG
3. Nas
4. Jadakiss
5. Jay-Z

O yea Jay-Z has a serious watch collection, which has evolved as well from the early days.
I was about to really dig into your list but with all due respect I don’t think your ear is up to par. Dr. Dre and Puffy are both producers and they don’t write ANYTHING. Everyone and their grandmother writes for Puffy, and Jay-Z has even written for Dre.

Weird thread. Jay Z’s best work was with Kanye, and Jay Z < Nas.

You’re a bit late; he mentioned it close to a decade ago. I think he dabbled with the brand but didn’t get caught up in it unlike Tyga who referred to his “Richard Mil” as an investment

I’ve only ever seen Jay wear the black Nadal RM027 and the 035 Gold Toro. But his collection is pretty different than all other rappers.

Here he’s wearing a Day Date II but there’s a Patek Sky Moon celestial in the box

Vacheron Constantin Malte

https://postimg.cc/0rGWgT47

The list is endless. Don’t think I’ve ever seen him wear A. Lange & though

Please dig my friend. I was simply saying success in dollars puts Dre & Puffy into the arena to allow them to relate to Jay-Z, not lyrically.

NEVER did I state puffy was a rapper or good lol. Hes not a music producer in that sense either. He is a businessman who is relentless, enough about him.

Dre on the other hand is one of the best producers in the industry BUT has had some good lyrical records. Any objections with Premier?

Jay-Z supposedly doesn't write fyi but i'm sure he wrote for many as stated.

Its all opinion but I would love to know yours on the 1-5 I mentioned.

Neither of them have done anything worth listening to in a long time. Jay Z’s more numerous mediocre offerings don’t make him superior. With that said, east coast rap isn’t my thing. The west coast is the best coast.

My argument would be reasonable doubt = illmatic and from there Nas doesn’t have another album that sniffs the blueprint, the black album or frankly several more.

I would say that Kanye’s best work was as a producer for Jay but not the other way around

No harm no foul. I was just going by your comparison between the two as rappers, which I couldn’t understand since neither of them are rappers, per se. In the world of ghostwriting (i.e. with someone like Jay-Z writing for you), it’s all usually done with reference tracks. People confuse Jay-Z not writing lyrics with the notion that he just goes in the booth and raps off the head. Not so. When he says he doesn’t write, he literally means it just in the physical sense.

When it comes to he and many others “writing” for other artists, they simply take the instrumental in question and record a reference track for the artist to listen to. They send that track to the artist, who now is armed with the exact words and cadence they need to record it themselves. Safe to say most of those reference tracks are subsequently destroyed lol....but there are plenty still floating around. You might know these things already; this is just for anyone reading who might not.

As far as my top 5, are you talking artists or producers?

Touché

I listed rappers but the choice is yours of course.

I will never understand how Jay-Z became famous. His words make no sense, and he has absolutely no flow.

His raps are jerky and sound like he doesn't know what the next line is supposed to be, like a kid reading a book aloud.

And I know I shouldn't expect much in terms of content, but come on- I can write better than that.

Jay Z is pretty damn good! But I respect you backing up your statement with your own rhymes. Good stuff my friend! Let’s see some more pics of that blazer please.

Thus makes me not want to own a patek again. The day I listen to this guy will be the day he learns how to play an instrument or write his own music without 75 producers. 74, i can understand.
But 75 is too many, Rimshot.

Some of the best singers in history didn’t write music, produce, or play instruments. I’m guessing you don’t want to own anything any of them have ever owned, either?

Rappers (in no order)

1. Jay
2. Pun
3. Kool G. Rap
4. Eminem
5. Nas

Mind you, this is my top 5. They’re not necessarily my personal favorites, though. I think people tend to leave objectivity out in the “top 5” conversation and would rather argue about who they personally like. For example, I don’t listen to Eminem’s catalog at all and rarely play Nas. I’m considering all of their complete bodies of work, but more importantly how likely I think it’d be for anyone who stands in front of them to come out on top.

Top 5 Producers, sticking to hip hop music (because there’s no way, for example, you’d logically be able to leave people like Quincy Jones, Prince, Rick Rubin, Curtis Mayfield, Barry White, Freddie Mercury etc out of the conversation):

1. DJ Premier
2. Dr. Dre
3. Pharrell/The Neptunes
4. Just Blaze
5. Dilla

I've seen a photo of Jay-Z wearing a grandmaster chime, so my guess is that's what he's talking about in the song.
