5711/1r vs. 5712/1a
Revisiting this head-to-head
5711/1r is stunning. The dial is mesmerizing. For me, it is not as versatile a watch. I wouldn’t wear it to the office, for example. It would be a special occasion watch. But boy is it beautiful. 5712/1a is a steel Nautilus with a blue dial. It is my first Patek. Versatile and easy to wear to the office or with jeans and a tee. It is a gorgeous and fun steel watch. Which would you choose, assuming you have a few other watches to pair with one of these?

I really like the 5711/1R and I've contemplated adding one to my collection. Only problem is I'm not comfortable with an all RG piece. I wear my Pateks to work because no one notices and I wear my Rolexes during weekends. As much as I like the RG 5711, it wouldn't fit in my rotation. I think the 5712 is way more versatile.

5711R for me. I’m not of huge fan of the busier Nautilus dials. That said, regarding watches, I admittedly have rather traditional taste.

That’s a lot of gold man, as you say it’s a special occasion piece and a spectacular one at that. Agree though that it isn’t as versatile as a steel Nautilus....which isn’t as versatile as a steel Rolex. I guess it’s all relative.

Neither. 5711 SS or 5167. Simplicity and SS for me. Or WG or Platinum.

I'd pick the 5712a without reservation....but I do not deny the beauty of the 5711r.....I just can't do the rose gold on my skin.

Owning them both its a toss up. Couldn’t really choose. However, it’s great to have a special occasion watch.

I did have this exact choice a couple for years ago and I went for the 5711R as you know Steve, I love the 5712, my fav SS watch with the 5164, but the 5711R is just sublime. Have another look at Ben's pic on the other 5711R thread, looks divine.

It’s a great looking watch. Nice weight to it as well.
I was offered a couple of times and turned down because I really don’t know when I would wear it. When it comes to PM, I stick to platinum and white gold. I see how much you like this watch, so I’ll give you my word, that if I’m offered again from the 3 ADs I work with, I’ll message you right away! I’m in NYC/Northern NJ. I agree with Neil! as beautiful as the 12 is, something about that 11R just makes it unique and different. And Ben’s picture is amazing as always!

I agree and it should be! I also will keep you in mind if another comes available. I own mine so no need for another.

Patek 5711-1R will be my choice. That said, I really won't mind to add a 5712A as I already have 5711-1R.

Both may be the answer, and find another candidate to part with! Quote:
You are right, and I don’t want to regret it again. I just need to determine if the 5711/1r can fill the void of the perfect 5712/1a. Or do I let something else go instead. For the blue steel Nautis, the 5711/1a is a nice watch, but I find its dial leaves me wanting more, and I much prefer the 5712/1a. I think the 5711/r and 5712/a are a great duel, though! And perhaps an even better pair. Quote:
It is a lot of gold, and I need to get comfortable with it! Jumping all in and will figure out if I can swim later. Quote:
I also was a SS and Platinum guy, but the pull of diversifying to a colored gold has been strong as of late. I jumped in to try it. And this is a watch that must be bought sight unseen. Such is the state of the market. Quote:
Cheers! Quote:
Thanks, Neil! Your pics and Ben’s pics, along with Kevin’s, are part of the reason I now own the 5711/1r! As I’ve said to others, the 5711/1r is like a big pot of chocolate fondue! Divine. Quote:
I am in a similar state work-wise. I will not wear the 5711/1r to work. It just won’t fly. But I can use it as a special occasion watch. Date night with my better half. It will be hard to part with the 12. Quote:
Thanks! I also like the simplicity of the 5711, but to me, it’s the 5711/1r that is the standout dial vs. the blue of the /1a. YMMV Quote:
Thanks, my friend! Quote:
Yup! Ben and Neil are guilty of enabling! Quote:
Yours will come soon! Love the 12/1a! It’s my favorite steel Nautilus by far. Quote:
You helped me get to this point, my friend!

I'd like to think it's a preference. 5712A you get a lot less attention, lighter and it's flying under the radar whereas the 5711R is heavier and people stare.
Im on to get my 5711R in the new year. The 5712A seems like an illusion right now even with me building up this relationship with the AD. |

If I had to choose one, it would be the 5712.
Or maybe the 5711. But probably the 5712. No, the 5711. Oh sod it, no way I can choose! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
