Need help from the AP experts

Hello,

This is my first post on the AP Discussion Forum. I currently own some Rolexes and Omegas, but I'm planning to acquire my first (and probably, only) AP.

Ever since I started getting interested in the brand, I always had my heart set on the RO (Ref. 15400ST)... and I was sure that it would be my first AP. However, I recently saw someone at LAX wearing an ROO Chrono (Ref. 26470SO), and it simply looked amazing. To my embarrassment, I couldn't stop staring at it until the guy finally noticed me. I looked away as fast as possible, but it was too late. He took a peak at my GMT Batman, and said "Nice Watch" with a condescending grin. Just to be clear.... I don't believe that Rolex is an inferior brand to AP, but the noticeable price difference between SS models have some AP owners feeling otherwise.

In any case, I would like to get the opinions of current AP owners. You're definitely more familiar with both watches. Please give me your expert advice (considering comfort, maintenance, market appreciation or depreciation, etc.) on which one should be my first, and most likely only AP.

And please..... don't be the first one replying "Buy them both".

Thanks in advance.

I’ve personally gone for the 15400 (twice), as I like the single coloured dial. I do love the ROC, though

I think you have to ask yourself whether or not you want another dress type watch or a chrono?

You could always split the difference?

Personally I prefer the 44 offshores or the 15202.

I agree with the guys that the ROC, esp in blue dial would be best for you, I like the subdials on it, fills up the large dial nicely on the 41mm.

first AP, one with a RO bracelet. Whatever watch you decide to be attached to that bracelet matters less

I had a 15400st in white/silver. Though I loved it and I was able to pull it off with my teeny flat wrist, I ended up letting it go. I'd love a ROO, but I don't think I have the wrist for it.

I have an AP RO 15400. It is not as rugged as my Rolex nor my VC 4500v Overseas. For a steel watch, it is dressier.

They are now selling used for about $6000-8000 higher than list for a new one.

I thank you all for your input and point of views. So far, it seems like I have to go with my first love, especially since the bracelet had a lot of influence. They are both great time pieces, and if I could afford it, I would really like to get them both.

When I first started admiring mechanical watches, I actually liked the ROO a lot since it was very sporty (and I was young). However, as time goes by the Royal Oaks really grew on me to the point that I sold my ROO and got a 15400 and just currently a 26331. The quality of the bracelet is like no others (like mentioned by a lot of others already). Go with either the 15400 or the 26331, you won’t be disappointed! Good luck

You could always do a strap/rubber swap on the RO Chronos later (pic is from another user here)

15400 is a classic and can been worn anywhere and fit in, not too sure the offshore will have the same versatility

I personally like that the 15300/15400 is more dressy and classic, but it can be a bit understated compared to the monsters like the offshores and panerais etc.

If you feel that Rolex is not inferior to AP, then I'd say you're not ready to get an AP and fully appreciate its history, craftsmanship, attention to details and exclusivity.

If its like a Rolex why would you want to pay so much more money for it?

I have always been a fan of AP and was like you and couldn't decide which one to get.
I was lucky enough to be in the NYC boutique this summer when 2 white dial 15400 showed up. Once I tried it on, it was decided that the 15400 was going to be the choice due mainly to the bracelet and beauty of the dial. I will get a ROC or ROO down the road but the 15400 is a great place to start. You'll love it.

Weird reaction from an AP owner, inferiority is personal perception, what one person judges as something can differ between another. Though AP is considered one of the holy trinity, so there is that.

Get a 15400, wait for an in-house chrono for the ROC. ROO are very sporty and i agree that the bracelet is what makes AP special for a step in the brand
