Cheated

I sent in my 1963 5513 submariner to Rolex for service. It came back new after a complete overhaul. I was issued a new serial number which comes back as a 1976. Is this all right? I feel cheated.

So they gave you a new service case? Did they also change out the dial? Before and after photos please.

Which is exactly why the general advice is always not to send any vintage to RSC!

Did you specify what you wanted done? Usually they will send a list of what needs work and what is optional. I'm surprised that they would go ahead and do such a thing without telling you.

So, so sad. Unless it already had a service dial, service insert, seevice crown, service hands, and a toasted original case. If that was the case, it is a push.

Did the dial have gold text before you sent it in? Did they replace dial and hands? Was the case in bad condition?

Sorry for your loss...

Any evidence of this happening previously?

OP - you now have a NOS 5513 that you can wear daily without any concerns that your vintage parts will degrade and the knowledge that its fully waterproof. Congratulations

How long had you owned the watch before sending it in? What did they quote for the service work?

Sorry to hear this happened. Only recourse you can try is calling RUSA and demanding your old parts back.

from the description from Rolex, it would most likely be a old vintage dial / hands now swapped for service parts.

The case likely had so much corrosion that it compromised the water resistency so they had to swap it out.

Shame I agree.

I don’t understand why you feel cheated if you approved the estimate.

You could have declined and received your watch back unrepaired with no parts changed.

OP probably feeling regret that he agreed to the work.

Appreciate that he agreed but in hindsight, didn't know the value to keeping the watch original. Anyway, somewhat of an expensive lesson to learn because the cost is effectively double - the devalue of the watch plus the cost of the repair. I would be upset too.

Rolex cheated you? Strong words, sounds like you were told exactly what Rolex proposed prior to the service, you authorized the service and now you're on a public forum accusing Rolex of having cheated you.

Take care. :)
