OK here is my opinion.

Many of us go to the supermarket and buy what is marketed being from Brazil and 'top quality'. However, all too often such coffee is unsatisfying at best and bitter and unpleasing at worst. I stopped drinking coffee altogether a couple of years ago.......until recently....

Recently, I discovered that Vietnam was the second largest coffee producer in the world, second only to Brazil. However, most of the Vietnamese coffee is Robusta and is used to go into making instant coffee.

The Vietnamese have lots of cafes and it is a daily ritual for many.

I implore you to try Trung Nguyen No. 5 (Culi Arabica) Coffee. It is a 100% arabica coffee and you can mainly buy it from your local asian grocer or online. After this I threw out my so called high quality Brazilian coffee because it was terrible in comparison to Trung Nguyen 5.

If you're really into coffee buy a stainless steel phin which is a brilliant little coffee machine you can buy for under $10 and view YouTube videos on how to use it. My $2,000 italian espresso coffee machine can stay in the box and I'll sell it on ebay.

Steve's post is interesting on a number of points.
Firstly and most importantly, the quality of the bean is paramount. No matter what system you use, or how skilled you are, you can't make great coffee from indifferent beans, particularly if they aren't fresh.
Secondly, you don't have to have a "$2000. Italian Espresso coffee machine" to make good coffee. Some of us choose to because we love the Espresso process but you don't HAVE to.
Thirdly, given a top quality bean, you can get really good results with a Mocha Pot, French Press, or Phin. I also enjoy the odd cup of Dripolator coffee although I prefer Espresso.
Finally, it is probably not a good idea to compare any Supermarket bean (regardless of where it is supposed to come from) with the quality that can be purchased from a reputable Roaster. I get my bean from an award-winning Roaster in Melbourne and it bears no comparison to anything I used to buy from a Supermarket when I was a novice on my 'Coffee-Journey'.

^^ All correct, my two words of wisdom are:
1. Whole Bean
2. Freshness

With only those two words your coffee experience will never be as bad again Steve, guaranteed!

Hi Steve, I ordered the coffee here to Canada like you suggested. Never had Culi Arabica before. On opening the bag it smells like chocolate and vanilla. Does it have a flavouring or is that all natural? Thanks.

Hi

Yes its 100% natural, the coffee does have a notable chocolate taste and not only vanilla notes, I have experienced passionfruit notes (in the coffee when finally made and when drinking).

I hope you enjoy the Trung Nguyen No.5!!! Its probably the best coffee bang for dollar in the world. I love it with condensed milk & cream.

OK guys forget all the BS, the science is now in on what makes the best coffee. Course grind, less coffee in the filter!

The coarse grind results in a relatively permeable bed, such that water flow and extraction are uniform and predictable. This method leads to fast, bright, sweet and acidic shots that taste the same each time.

I make a latte macchiato on my Miele cm5 every morning. I use stumptown hairbender beans and horizon organic whole milk. I was using this almond milk barista blend for awhile then I realized the machine only uses about 3.5-4 oz of milk so I went back to the better tasting whole milk.

This machine is probably the best money I spent last year hands down. Really fantastic.

You guys are sooo making me want to enjoy a better cup of coffee.

I typically like the quick and simple, but surely can also appreciate and admire the excellence of great execution.

Morning routine...

Either V60 pour over, or aeropress for me. Always light to medium roast, single origin coffee. (Guatemala & Peru are my favourites).

Hand grinding is extra fun

Am an EXTREMELY picky MoFo and just tried some Golden Hills Espresso (Signature Blend). Verrrry smooth, and very easy within our Rocket machine as even my Muse / wife can pull a great cup(!). i RARELY can recommend espresso bean, and the stuff i usually get is imported from Brazil(!) because no one carries it anywhere in the world except in Brazil.

For USA folks, here's a seriously smooth and yummy blend i highly recommend.

Just ordered me a batch of the Trung Nguyen No. 5. Looking forward to it. I’ve been on a Black Rifle Coffee kick for awhile now and I gotta say, that’s some good stuff.

Anyone have any recommendations on a good high quality drip machine?
