Sometimes I don't want to help anyone. I got an email from a potential customer wanting me to restore an 18th century watch. Caveats: it couldn't leave his sight, and he wanted it done same day.

No.

Are they Egyptian cotton Q-tips, or can I use a generic brand?

That depends on the colour of the cotton.

Some English guy implied she was rude

Because he was English and she was American. Ironically disproving himself in the process.

I used to work with a repair center that had two rates;

$125 an hour

or

$250 an hour to sit and watch the repair take place

Nobody was ever willing to pay double. ;)

Yeah... And they get offended when you have different rates. I never want customers to be anything but happy. But sometimes they make it more difficult than the average customer.

This is true, it's a fine line. I have to admit, the business has changed. Even as recently as the late 1990's, most repairman and centers I knew were mighty rough around the edges. It was the end of career for most though, as they'd been repairing watches for decades and were closing in on retirement.

I learned so much though, from those "old timers", the mentality of someone in their 70's, who had been "educated" by Elgin or Bulova and had practiced their trade for 50 years... especially in an era when watch repair was just as common as car repair today.

The business used to be rough, it used to be dirty. It was all about streamlining the process and reducing customer overhead.

When I got started I would flat rate charge $35.00 for tear down, full clean, lubrication and assembly. From an Elgin to Patek, same price, same turn around, same warranty.

Oh how things have changed.

I apologize for the trip down memory lane, but there used to be a time that turning down a customers ridiculous requests was free of any concern whatsoever. If they were upset, they could just find someone else to do it.

I thoroughly enjoy reading through the many threads you experts are giving to those in need of advice. You all amaze me with your knowledge and experience, and sharing that knowledge goes a long way for many

I'm not going to stop advising people, don't worry.
I'm just not going to "teach" them how to fix their own watch, when they don't even know which way to turn a screw.
