I just had my datejust serviced by the Rolex Service Center (Manila) for a complete overhaul and replacement of tube and gasket/s. Service took about 10 days and cost $265. When I picked up the watch a couple of days ago, it was like new.

Vanessa where do you work I have a 2004 GMT that will not stay wound RCS cleaned it under warranty in 2006 did not improve. It runs down even when I wear it at night. I wind it once a week. Thanks

What a great post.

My dad insists it's not necessary and keeps telling me his '79 Rolex still works fine and so does datejust from '98.

I wish he would just send it in. Lol...

Thanks for the good and well expose post.I think the Rolex service is not too much expensive and in waranty i would go always to Rolex house,but out of it,there is anothers watchmakers that makes the same revision service cheaper with the same quality.

Very nicely put indeed, puts those to shame that even dare say "its expensive" for a service. I had a client the other day say "I cant understand why its more expensive to get a service on my Submariner than on my Mercedes Benz"... I knew there were many justified reasons for this as Ive been into watches for years, but didnt know all the steps and accurate info. Next time someone says that Ill be ready on the triggers! lol

I thought I might add a photo to go along with Vanessa's written explanation. We are an authorized Rolex Jeweler with a Rolex trained watchmaker on staff. I asked him to lay out a watch for me to photograph a disassembled watch, in for service. Customers are usually surprised how much work is actually done. Note the dime for scale.

Vanessa, how much longer does a watch with more moving parts, like a GMT or Daytona, take to service? What's the usual difference in price on these compared to a watch with only a date feature?

GMT doesn't take very much longer. A Daytona takes probably twice the time. Price is about double.

With any watch repair, it's only as good as the technician doing the work. We are an authorized Rolex Jeweler and have a watchmaker trained by Rolex and we are inspected by Rolex to make sure we have the correct equipment (costly) and to make sure we are up to date on training. I have asked myself, what would I do if I didn't have our watchmaker or when he retires? I would always recommend that you send to the Rolex service centers. The thing I would miss is the interaction with the watchmaker, the personal discussion about what was specifically wrong with MY watch. If I wanted to find a watchmaker, I would look for two credentials, the Rolex trained certificate and the ability to buy parts from Rolex directly, and the American Watchmakers Clockmakers Institute (AWCI) "CMW21" Master Watchmaker credentials. The last is a relatively new test (2005) to check the competency of the watchmaker. This will give you a capable watchmaker. The Rolex parts availability directly from Rolex are a must, and they have specialized tools that are superior to the others on the market.
