3 Daytona's to many? Dreaming about a Patek...
First off, I will say the Daytona is probably my favorite modern watch. As a motorsport fan I have always loved chronographs, and just have a fond appreciation for the history and style of the Daytona. I currently have 3 11 series in the collection, one stainless, one RG oysteflex and the WG blue dial. I am trying to decide about letting one of these go, potentially 2, to jump into a Patek Chronograph or Patek Annual Calendar. Something like the 5172G in blue or salmon dial for example. If I had to choose one Daytona to let go and bring my first Patek into the collection, what do you think? My collection is entirely Rolex, so thinking about diversifying a bit with some other brands.

I wouldn't give up any of the Daytonas you have for a Patek. Having experienced all the above that you mentioned, I like the robustness of the Daytona, especially on OysterFlex. The 5172G is very very well designed and finished, but I would find it difficult to wear it on a daily basis.

That 5172 is without a doubt a beautiful watch but as a fan of motor sports where does it come in play ? For me it lacks the soul of racing if that makes sense.
Not so sure I would trade in one of yours against the Patek as beautiful and on another level it may be.

Beautiful as the PP’s may be, they don’t compare to the solid reliability the Daytona provides.

The Pateks are beautiful but I just don't care for watches on leather

mile2424, have you checked out H Moser, Czapek, FP Journe, etc. as modern Patek is a bit, ummm... unless you're looking for a pre-1980s Patek

I would keep the white gold one. 5172G + WG Daytona is a solid combo!

The Daytona is the “Daytona” and no way can other watches hold that “x” factor. It is what it is at this point in time in its history. I would not sell any of your Daytonas.

I too find the Daytona to be Rolex’s most attractive watch. I have felt the same way all my adult life. There’s always the chase of the next great collector piece in this hobby. I have several Daytona too and also have the Patek chronograph (5980 in my case). As many have said, the robustness of the Daytona is unmatchable. Especially in the company of any Patek. I rarely wear my 5980 for that reason. Subconsciously, it’s tough to decide when is the right time to wear the Patek. Any modern Daytona doesn’t have that dilemma.

I’m a huge Daytona fan (and also own three 11 series) and I would do this trade.
Ideally you only give up one Daytona (the SS) but I’d be ok (I guess) with moving both the SS and OF for the Patek. I would definitely keep that WG blue dial. That is the Daytona that got away from me at the AD. I did get a Meteorite Pepsi instead though. I could live with only one Daytona if I also had an awesome Patek chrono or AC. Make sure you really want the Patek. I way overpaid for a Nautilus back when it was all the rage - even though I wasn’t totally sure I liked it - and then market collapsed and now I’m “stuck” with it.

Did Patek Philippe also lower their Nautilus waterproofness to a very small rating like Chinese watches?

Sometimes the evolution of watch collecting takes you to different brands and styles, but sometimes it’s just you forcing it.
Is a Parltek what you really desire or are you feeling like you SHOULD desire something more? Maybe the Daytona is your thing. I love them. Don’t make a move just to make a move.

I’m unmoved by the modern Daytona, so I say get something new and different, or go down the vintage Daytona rabbit hole…

The Daytona is my favorite Rolex as well, and I have been a fan since the Zenith movement models were sitting in cases. The 116500 in white is my Rolex grail.
That said, I would so some form of trade for a Aqua Travel Time as that is my PP grail. |

I would not dream of that Patek. If this is the only PP you are thinking about, I would keep the 3 Daytonas.

I currently own 8 Rolexes, including 2 Daytonas and love the brand. However I recently purchased my first Patek from my AD.
In my case I wanted a dressier piece for my collection and some diversification. I went with a 5396r and it is perfect for what I was looking for. For Sports watches I much prefer Rolex over Patek equivalents, but for complication watches Patek is in another league. I didn’t trade any watches for mine and only you can decide if you’re willing to let go of one of yours, but a bit of diversification is great for a collection. Would be interested to see the comments if you cross post on the Patek sub forum. Good luck! |

I dont get having 3 of the same watch (I understand the minor differences, but to me its like having a sub date and sub no date), keep one and get a PP if you can get one at a decent price as they seem to hold their value extremely well
