Sub goes on Safari

I’m on a three week safari in southern Zimbabwe and I am wearing my new Submariner which is my new hard duty watch. I thought I would share a few observations. My time here has consisted of, among others, building blinds, swimming in the river, replacing Cruiser wheel bearings and brake pads, falling from a tree and banging the watch many times. Also, many treks of 15 to 20 km per day with many climbs up rocks and watch hits along the way.

The good. This is an extremely sturdy watch and is taking everything in stride with no problems. When I get back to Dallas, I’ll probably take it into the RSC and have them ensure that the fall didn’t do any damage, but the timekeeping is unaffected so I doubt it. The guards on the stem are also really helpful and they’re a bit banged up now. Quality of construction of the watch is beautiful although I have certainly not looked at it with a loupe, nor do I intend to.

The things I don’t like for my use are first, the bezel. The raised bezel with scallped edges is constantly getting banged against something as I use it. I would much prefer a sleek bezel which did not project. My 2nd gripe is the clasp which essentially covers the entire rear of the bracelet and has protruding sharp edges which also get caught on things along the way. I would really prefer a much smaller and simpler clasp and don’t care at all about the adjustment feature since I never readjust watch fit once I have set it.

I admit this is tough watch use but since it is a “tool watch” I thought I would report.

Wow ... what a trip! And what a great trip wrist-buddy!

I was roughing it about a month ago wearing my ND Sub when I was touring Europe. You know, with all those “animals” in the streets of Rome and Barcelona mugging people for their watches from mopeds

You can see the fear in my eyes as I eat this gelato while trying to conceal my 114060 in Florence...

That's a lovely watch you have there, almost as nice as my old Sub 14060!! Subs seem to be built like tanks, yours maybe even more so as you have the bigger case. I'm a bit clumsy, and mine (daily watch) has been bashed really hard and dropped many times over the 23+ years I've had it. After a really hard knock or bad drop I take it to my AD to have it checked. Always got a green light, the thing just runs and runs! I certainly don't baby it, but take the sensible precaution of having it pressure-tested once a year and always making sure that the crown is always properly screwed in. I have the old jingly-jangly oyster bracelet, so don't have the new big clasp you have. I don't have any issues with the bezel, but take any cheaper divers watch and rotate the bezel...the difference in quality/feel/action is enormous! Enjoy your Sub for many years...!!

Sounds like a great time!

I am probably wrong or at least I hope I am, but in that picture above, I don't like the fit and position of the end link which also looks elongated and I think the crystal looks like it sits too high above the bezel insert. If you had posted that picture in the watchout section, I would say the watch was fake. It's probably just the angle of the picture.

Have you had it checked out or did you buy it from an AD?

Been there

Lived in Southern Africa for a year in 1989. Bought a pick up truck "bakkie" and put about 30,000 kilometers on it traveling from Capetown to Tanzania. Did not take the Rolex since two bush wars were still being sorted out. Pretty country, but don't think I would go back to travel on our own. Photo taken on the road (if you want to consider it a road) to Maun Botswana. Stopped for a Lion beer (terrible, go with Castle if you can find it) and bought a round on the house. One guy in the house!

Don't know if I am allowed to say it but I hunted with Gordon Cundill of Hunters Africa in Botswana and traveled the Okavango with Deiter Lohman from Joburg while we were there. Corrie VanViek (spelling) who owns MCC Motion Picture Company in Capetown was the neighbor across the street from our host when we first arrived. Hang in there my friend!

Couple of other friends were Chris and Charlotte McBride who wrote the "White Lions of Timbavati. We attended Buthelezi's coming out party as McBride's guests while we were there. What a great time it was!

When in Rome...

Actually, I’ve been traveling with this Coach “man purse” since 2016 and wouldn’t leave home without it ... it’s awesome!

There is a reason field watches were invented ... Maybe a explorer is better suited for this trip ... In few days my sub will be celebrating 1 year birthday ... It's been daily wearer for me and my only complaint is that I wish they made sub in 39mm or 38mm for my smaller wrist

Amazing trip. I am always concerned traveling with a fancy watch. I usually bring my Quartz seamaster (which I adore, but wouldn't jump off a bridge if I lost it. I did get to wear my sinn 104 to the great pyramid in Cairo.

I hope I can make it down there one day!
