Hi folks

I am a new member to this forum, I live in Spain and have owned my Rolex Air king for almost a year now. It is a 2003 model with an engine turn bezel and an oyster strap.

I am generally very happy with the watch and it keeps relatively good time, only gains about 25 minutes per week, for such an old watch i'm pretty impressed.

I am planning a trip to the UK for christmas, it will be the first time I have flown with my Rolex. My friends fathers brother works as a baggage handler at Malaga airport and I was talking to him about my trip. He told me that as my watch was so old it wouldn't be a good idea to fly with it, it may get damaged due to the change in air pressures in the cabin, especially on landing. He said if I really wanted to take it with me I should put it in an air-tight plastic box wrapped in cling-film in my suitcase.

I would like to confirm that what he said is true as I dont want to cause damage to my most precious possession.

What ever you can take your Rolex will take quite a bit more and cannot see any problem in flying with any Rolex no matter what its age.I have travelled flown and dived with watches a lot older than yours.But your watch gains to much if thats correct 25 minutes a week,your Airking can easily match less than a minute a week either way fast or slow.

25 minutes a week is, frankly, terrible. Consider getting it regulated. And your watch will be fine throughout the plane ride.

Firstly a 2003 model is not really that old. Secondly wearing your watch while flying is not going to hurt it one little bit.

However, if it is gaining 25 minutes every week there is a problem - or did you mean 25 seconds a week?

No, it's not the battery. I had my mates brother do a full service on it a few months ago. I paid for a new battery.

Afraid the Airking does not use a battery its a mechanical watch with a automatic winding system.So Littlepickle is in a Bigpickle if you paid and put a battery in a real Airking watch post a picture of your Airking watch.

If a baggage handler told you to put it in your checked luggage I would say he's going to keep a close eye out for your suitcase, and say goodbye to your airking!
Not to mention that the air pressure is more even in the passenger cabin than the cargo hold.

A Rolex should be fine to fly with. Many many people fly with their Rolexes (much older than 2003) all the time.

Your watch does not use a battery.

If it is truly off by 25 minutes a week, there is something wrong. It's so far out of regulation that I'm guessing it's not just regulation and needs to be repaired by a watchmaker. Should be more like 1 minute a week.

It's a bit hard to take this thread seriously...........

Anybody who has a fairly new timepiece and calls it "such an old watch", uses a baggage handler as a source, has a Rolex Air-King that "only gains about 25 minutes a week", and thinks that a Seamaster is a "better flyer" than the Air-King, cannot be taken seriously......

Fly with the AK-- it will be fine. An '03 watch is basically brand new.

IMO, your Rolex is always safest on your wrist. Sending it in your luggage is really asking for theft. No matter how you pack it, the luggage handlers will see it in the luggage xray. A few of the baggage handlers are expert at extracting valuables from luggage.

Besides, no matter how you wrap it, the watch will see at least as much pressure change in your luggage, in the cargo area of the plane.
