Suggestions on Watch Safety

I happened to read the (admittedly very interesting) article Hodinkee posted from the NY Times regarding safety deposit boxes. Based on the info presented there, I'm not too keen on trying to find one for my own valuables (not to mention I only have a couple pieces that I'd rather wear anyhow). I've read several threads about safes and other more professional methods of keeping valuables safe, but many of the suggestions involve a safe bolted to the floor of a home. As I live in a rented apartment, this isn't exactly feasible.

Does anyone have any suggestions on how to keep watches and other valuables safe in a rented property?

get a safe that's not bolted down, or bolt one to a wall.

Or just insure them and wear them...

Just have them properly insured.

Have them insured and wear and enjoy. I do have a small safe that is discreetly hidden and bolted to keep the watches I'm not wearing in. It is only to make things a bit tougher for a would be thief so insured they will stay just in case.

As others said, insure them.
You can also buy some can safes and throw them in with your pantry stuff or bathroom medicine cabinet.

They're already insured, I did that as soon as I moved in. I do wear one every day, no issue there. I'm just more concerned about work crews, building maintenance, etc. coming in and out of the apartment while I'm not there during the day.

There isn't really a place to bolt it to the wall unfortunately. I'm hoping maybe someone has an idea of a concealed hiding spot or a way to put a sturdy lock on a drawer that isn't obvious.

I agree with insuring them. I bought my first luxury time pice about two months ago a 116610LN with date and it was/has been insured from the time I picked it up at dealer. It’s a bit of a pain to have it appraised every year or so to keep up with the coast to replace it but literally a small trade off for piece of mind!!

Get an indoor plant and bury them in the pot.

Or wear them them and insure them. Easiest route.

Yup, or zip lock bag

I'm going to look into that, thanks.

For those of you suggesting insurance, both of mine are insured. I wear one every day, but the other stays in my watch box at home. My concern was over how to protect that and any other pieces I add moving forward when they're not being worn.

Why would anyone be doing that? Without your knowledge?

I would get a deadbolt or two before I would worry about a safe. If the safe is not bolted to the floor it could easily be picked up and carried away.

Ingenious! I love the Fruit Cocktail one. Even I try to ignore the canned goods in my pantry, no way a thief would ever find that!

The OP should just buy a few of these and insure everything. That'll be safe from anything besides fire, and from what I've read, most home safes aren't really protecting you from fire anyway.

Buy a fish tank. Put the watches in the fish tank. Put a black mamba in the fish tank with the watches. Be careful retrieving the watches.

Or insurance.

There have been times when I'm not home that they've had to go in and fix things without prior notice. Unfortunately I can't install a deadbolt on a rental.
I agree about the safe, which is why I'm looking for alternatives.

Though my watches are insured, I obviously want to minimize the risk of them being stolen. While both models are still in production, they have sentimental value to me that can't be replaced.

The longer you’re prepared to spend hiding and unhiding them will determine how deeply you can conceal them.

Avoid the obvious places like under the mattress or in your sock drawer.

I have had the same concerns, looked at many options and I ended up storing them in a bank safe. They are insured, but some of them would be extremely hard to replace, so I needed a better solution. I have a safe at home, a very good one, but the problem with safe is they are the obvious item a robber would look for first. Anyway, after looking into lot’s of solutions the easiest one was a safe at the bank. I keep 3 at home that I rotate, and then about every 4-6 weeks, I go t9 the bank and switch them up... bank is 5mn from where I live, so no a big deal.
