16710 - overpolished?

Hey TRF!

Maybe some "case-experts" could chime in:

I am interested in buying this watch and would like to ask: does it look overpolished to you or is it fine?

all the best,

Maybe it's just me but it's hard to tell from those photos when they're washed out like that

On the surface it kinda looks alright. The lugs appear to have some bevel/chamfer and the springbars aren't extruding from the lug holes, which points to "looks good". But yeah, difficult to say for sure. If it were me, I'd politely ask for better photos

Awesome reference though! Gotta love those serif inserts

Lug holes, non-SELs, but a Swiss-made dial lead me to think A-serial?

Get a better picture of the lug holes would tell a lot if they are crisp or rounded out. Looks okay but as said your pics are washed out and makes it hard to tell.

somewhat polished but still quite ok. it retains most of the original case features. Go for it! But be aware this has a service dial.

When new, the lugs on the 11 and 7 hour side are thicker then those on the crown side.

On this particular watch, the lugs on the crown side are thicker but still not really strong.
Particularly the lug at 7 is too thin imo

Yes, i‘d not take this watch with that degree of polishing

Sorry for the ignorant question, but is the fact that the watch has a service dial a big deal? The dial is correct and it looks great, right?

Service dial with "Swiss Made"? Shouldn't it be "Swiss" only?

Mine reads Swiss T<25 but then again it is from the 1970's, things may have been different then.

As a caveat that it's really difficult to take super-sharp pictures of a shiny watch, these pictures don't show enough detail.

It appears to me that it has been polished but it's nice to see that (so far) the anti-polishing crowd has yet to go nuts and tell you that it was "ruined" and not worthy of anyone's wrist.

I know nothing about the service dial, but I'm really digging that red GMT hand.

Priced way to high for what it is....need serial number to make sure it’s service dial. One more polish and it will be overpolished that’s for sure

I agree. Comes to over $12K (after a rough conversion from Euros), and would not pay that high for that particular specimen.

Thanks.

Hard Pass on this one.

Should be under 9K.

$12k commands the crispest possible unpolished case and a complete and mint full set.

Don't overspend due to FOMO

OP indicated 1990 E-Serial. A period-correct dial for this year/serial would show T<25, not SWISS MADE.

Lovely- thanks.
I had the same watch from 2001 but sold it in 2006- my biggest watch related regret!
Only recently back in the Rolex fold with a 114060 and enjoying the brand again.

Agreed on the older tritium service dials but I thought luminova service dials only said "Swiss" or possibly "T < 25" (when they transitioned from Tritium to Luminova) and that original luminova dials said "Swiss Made" making this some "custom" replacement.

A regret that can easily be remedied! Although perhaps at a higher cost than 2006

(2001 was a great year for the 16710. Lugs + SELs = a desired combination!)

Is that being realistic though? a quick search on watchrecon doesnt turn up a single 16710 for less than 8k listed recently. You might get the watch head for $6000usd.

I agree with fleetford. Would not pay 12k for this. Completely unpolished and 100% original throughout can be easily had for 12k.

The transition from tritium to luminova was around 1999 and those watches had Swiss only dials.
