mjb gets a new car

There are a few of you on here that know me IRL, and so the title of the thread is no big surprise. It's more like "it's been over a month, what else is new?".

For various reasons of planetary alignment, this car kind of fell into my lap, so yesterday I picked up my new 2023 BMW M550i xDrive.

Most of these cars (heck, almost all new cars) are still selling for MSRP or better, so I considered myself lucky/fortunate and as a good (excellent!) customer I was able, between discounts, rebates, coupons and incentives to obtain nearly $7500 off.

I traded in my Alpina B7 (it was an itch that I had to scratch) and so I saved on sales tax as well, so the whole transaction cost me nothing. Well, nothing if we exclude the huge loss that I took on the Alpina. Nothing says depreciation like a BMW 7 series.

For those unfamiliar with these cars, it has a 32 valve double overhead cam 4.4-liter turbo V8 engine that puts 523 horsepower into an 8-speed automatic transmission with all wheel drive for a 0-60 time of between 3.6 and 4.5 seconds, depending on your source. It's quick. It's also luxurious, comfortable, handles extremely well and has all of the latest technology, which, because it's a BMW, often works occasionally quite well.

Unless you are in the left lane. BMW's are speed limited to 10 miles under the limit in the left lane.

Congrats! Beautiful car.

Congrats Mike! Looks great! And yes, being in automotive retail I know what you mean about 7 series depreciation, but it was a hell of a ride I’m sure. Enjoy the new one it’s a stunner!

Very nice car! Unless you are going to track it or are an insane car freak, it's a far better value-performance deal vs the M5. I had an M550i and would still have it if I wasn't scared to death of owning one outside of warranty. I loved that car.

Congrats!
I have a 2020 and it has been a great car. Relaxing in comfort mode. Like a muscle car in sport mode.

Seeing that it was a B7 I was sure you took a sizable hit on trade in, sorry to see that happen... But congrats on the new car; the G30 is already a very nice platform and the m550i xdrive is just a great car, certainly fast as f*** when you want it to be. Enjoy!

And then park it like you own it! Ha ha!

Stole that line from a funny air travel joke:

Flight is delayed on the ground and as the plane leaves the departure gate, the captain gets on the mic and says "Sorry for the delay, ladies and gentlemen. To make up for time I'm going to fly this plane like I stole it!"

An old lady sitting in the back loudly replies "and then land it like you own it!"

Nice car. A 670hp RaceChip tune is calling. That engine wants to scream.

As a BMW owner for the last 30 years, I can assure you that they certainly come with turn signals, but thank goodness you aren’t obligated to use them

Beautiful, I sold my BMW 550i GT almost 8 months ago...miss the feeling of driving that living room down the highway, don't miss never exceeding 20 kph with a V8 Twin Turbo jammed in city traffic....

Enjoy the ride!
