New Explorer

The other day I had an opportunity to try the new Explorer, and as an owner of the previous iteration (Mark II), I have to admit that 36mm looks much more balanced. The dial, case and overall look & feel just feels right to my eye.

Does anyone own both and if so, what are your thoughts?

Different case, dial size & layout, different movement...they are only the same in name.

As an owner of the new one & 114270 in the past & had then opportunity to get 214270 mark II back in 2017- the new one is the best out of these. Now if the 1016 is in the mix…

I owned the 39mm MKII and then bought the new 124270 in 36mm. After six months it was apparent that I was never going to wear the 39mm anymore so I sold it. The 124270 for wrists at 7" and under is brilliant and has perfect balance. It is my most worn watch!

I agree with you OP - current Explorer is so well proportioned.

Controversial topic though.

Bought the 124270 six months ago and I agree it is really well done. The only downside is my other watches get don’t get worn much now…

I had both and agree, got rid of the 214270 MK2 once I was sure I preferred the 124270. Prefer the gloss dial to the Matt dial as well. Wrist size helps - I have a 7 inch wrist.

Appreciate all the comments, thank you. I’ll try to source a 36mm from an AD.

I really like the 39 but when you put them side-by-side like in the pic above I have to agree that the dial layout and overall proportions are better on the 36. I actually also prefer the gloss dial over the matte…..

For a wrist under 7’’ there is no question that the 36 is the way to go. For 7” and over, it’s a matter of overall watch sizing preference. I’d say at the 7’’ mark you could really go either way.

What a stunning collection. How do you chose to wear the Sub vs. Explorer? In many ways, the Explorer seems superfluous when you own a Sub (the Sub can do everything the Explorer can do - and more), yet there’s something that’s just so alluring about the Explorer. I’d love to own one, but also know if I was wearing it when I needed to time something or check the date, I’d curse myself for not picking the Sub that day!

It is actually a seasonal thing for me because the Explorer 36 fits so well under the cuff of a long sleeve shirt. So...Explorer in the Fall and Winter, and then I rotate between Submariner, GMT, and YM40 in the Spring and Summer. The Explorer is definitely the most worn watch in my collection!

I tried on the 39 a few times at the AD back when they were available in the case. Never felt right IMHO. Got my 124270 in May 2021 and can’t keep it off my wrist! Competes with my Sub for wrist time. The Exp just feels right for me.

Seen both. Big difference. The 39 was one of my least favourite current Rolex watches, and the 36 is maybe my favourite.

I still like the 39mm as it actually looks more sporty in comparison, but the 36mm version is perfect.

With WOS (London) there’s apparently a year and a half wait time. I only bought a couple of watches from them, so I’m sure that for someone with a better “relationship”/purchase history it’ll take less.

Was this 36 mm vs. 39 mm? In that case they are different watches. :D I thought the comparison was the old 36 mm vs. the new 36 mm.

I’ve had a number of Explorers, including 14270 and 214270 mk2, and without question the 124270 (new 36mm) is the superior model for me.

Have to agree that the only issue with e 124270 is that it's hard giving other watch's in the collection any wrist time! The proportions are spot on

Only own the 39mm but have tried on the 36. Too small for me, looks very dainty. If you have a smaller wrist the 36 looks great though.

I have a 7" wrist, so 36mm is on the smaller size for sure, but it's a more classy look compared to the 39mm version.

Mind you, I had a 47mm PAM 372 in my collection before, so I'm used to both big and small watches.

If they just made the dial slightly more like the 1016 dial - and reduced the price... - it would be the perfect watch.
