Rolex that keeps value

Hello All, Am looking at buying my first Rolex. My budget is between $13,000 - 17,000. What Rolex watch would you recommend that will keep value. Am a long term holder. One of my favourite watches is 2022 Rolex Milgauss Z-Blue dial.

Welcome. If you can get at retail from AD then go for ss sub, gmt, skydweller, or daytona. Good luck.

Not a Milgauss....stick to a Submariner 41/GMT Master II/Daytona/Skydweller or a Deep Sea and buy from your local, friendly Rolex AD at MSRP

Buy what you like the value retention should not matter. Sounds like you have your mind set on the Milgauss

Sports models will always hold value best. As others have mentioned a sub, GMT, obviously Daytona, etc. but if your favorite watch is a Milgauss get a milgauss.

Invest in your happiness and enjoyment of the watch.

Welcome to TRF OP. Milgauss Z-Blue is a nice piece! That would be an excellent first Rolex imo. Bottom line is to go for what you like and not because of value retention or increase. In general, all Rolex watches hold their values very well, and will more than likely always go up if you're planning to keep it and enjoy it long term. By long term, I am talking 10 years or more.

Buy whatever Rolex watch you want to own and wear in good health now that's far more important than any £$€ value.

I see a lot of GMT, SkyD, Daytona comments on this thread but in my experience without purchase history you would be extremely lucky to get one of these watches as your first piece from an AD. Also, I believe pretty much every mens watch in the catalogue will hold its MSRP value at minimum.

Go for what you like. Don’t worry about value.

I have value talks and speculating, but if you like the Z Blue that will be the best watch for you. The value is in what you get out of it daily not monetarily.


Monetarily, I wouldn’t listen to the majority of comments above. What’s “hot” to today likely won’t be tomorrow. The Daytona was a dog back in the day. Milgauss is funky and unique and sold in far less numbers than what’s mentioned above and has every bit as much potential as any of todays so called “hot watches”.

For what you’re spending, just get what you like. Any mens model, especially sports hold value alright.

Taste in watches is personal, don’t let value retention be your primary driver.

Dave, if you like the Milgauss, I would suggest buying it.

None of us have any idea what is going to happen with respect to value, and I would suggest not purchasing on the basis of value retention. Beyond not having any idea what the value of these watches will be in the future, this can potentially ruin the ownership experience.

These are timepieces to be enjoyed, even if they depreciate substantially.

Any men's SS model will keep good value.

Any ladies' model will not. But it doesn't matter, because ladies tend to keep their watches, they don't "flip" as much

If you're buying your watch based on value then don't bother, you'll get paranoid about every scratch or mark that appears on it.

Buy a Casio and save your money.

Sorry but if you're buying a watch, irrespective of brand, you're buying it to wear and enjoy, retained value should be secondary and not important as you'll be keeping the watch for many years.

Invest whatever you would spend on the watch in the S&P 500 and over 5-10 years you will get a much higher return. Let someone else buy the watch who intends to wear and keep it and who could care less about how much it will be worth in a decade.
